Wales Church to hold 100th Anniversary Celebration Worship and Picnic

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its building, Jerusalem Presbyterian Church of Wales invites the community to a celebratory worship service and picnic on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 9:30 a.m.

A portion of the Century Celebration service will be held at Jerusalem Cemetery on Highway 83 and Brandybrook Road in Wales, the site of the congregation's first church building. Welsh settlers established the congregation in 1842, gathering in a barn owned by Richard "King" Jones. Their first church was a small log chapel referred to as Capel Log. Worshipers replaced the original Capel Log with a larger wooden structure in 1859 and eventually constructed the current Jerusalem Church building at 207 W. Main Street in Wales, in 1913.

Today, Jerusalem Presbyterian Church honors its history while maintaining a vibrant church life. Members have strong dedication to the community, supporting the Kettle Moraine Food Pantry, Hope Center, Lad Lake, Women's Center of Waukesha County and other local organizations, along with global charities like Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and Grandmothers Beyond Borders.

The Century Celebration service at Jerusalem Cemetery on Sept. 8 will include music led by a brass quintet, Sterling & Brass. Trevor Williams and Geraint Wilkes, two accomplished vocalists, will sing traditional hymns in the Welsh language.

Following the service at the cemetery, the celebration will continue at the current church building with a hymn sing, picnic and games for children. The day's activites mimic those the congregation enjoyed when Jerusalem Presbyterian Church held its first services at that location in 1913.

The public is invited to attend both the service and picnic following. Meet at the church at 207 Main Street in Wales at 9:30 a.m. for introductory remarks and transportation to Jerusalem Cemetery. People attending are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. For more information, call Jerusalem Presbyterian Church at 262-968-3408.
