The Immigrant Experience

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free” reads Emma Lazarus’s poem at the foot of the Statue of Liberty. As a nation of immigrants, America’s historic develop-ment has sometimes been called a melting pot, sometimes a golden door of opportunity and other times a cauldron of hard-ship. We will understand the 19th and 20th century immigration story from the Chinese railroad workers to the great waves of Europeans. We will enter crowded tenements, migrant tent cities, and find snakes in the rafters in a sod house on the prairie. Stu-dents will also learn how to research and archive their own family immigration stories
