Taxes Increase Slightly in Proposed 2013 Village Budget

Maintaining roads, parks and service are the priorities for the village's funding plans. Residents can learn more about the proposed budget at two meetings in September.

Village taxes would increase 1.62 percent under Sussex's proposed 2013 budget, which will allow the village to maintain and even improve its level of service.

According to a memo from Village Administrator Jeremy Smith, introducing the proposed budget, the owner of the average home ($280,725) will experience a tax increase of $22.24, or 1.62 percent. The village will raise its levy by $149,678, or 2.8 percent, with the budget proposed.

"Sussex continues to provide a great value to its citizens.  In the new levy limit environment it is essential that the Village Board consider how and when to utilize the remaining levy capacity it has available to meet the continued needs of the community," Smith wrote in the memo.

Smith also wrote in the memo that "the base budget will allow Sussex to maintain and slightly improve services, but does not address the transformational items that the community needs long term."
