High Winds Friday, Potential Ice Storm Sunday

Batten down the hatches Friday; wind gusts could reach 45 m.p.h., with potential snow and ice over the weekend.

Hang onto your hats Friday or you may find them tumbling into Sussex Creek or across your subdivision.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory, saying west winds could reach sustained speeds of 20 to 30 m.p.h. Friday and Friday night, with gusts to 45 m.p.h.

If you live near a waterway, be mindful that extensive snow melt may cause localized flooding. "Several rivers will exceed bankful and approach flood stage," according to a statement from the NWS.

Then, a fitful weekend could be in store if a complex storm tracks "over or near southern Wisconsin Sunday into Sunday night," according to the NWS.

The storm could bring "an initial push of snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain" late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

"The mixture will continue over the area on Sunday, then change back to mostly snow Sunday night," if the storm follows a particular path, the weather service says.

Depending on that path, "there is a potential for a significant accumulation of ice and snowfall greater than six inches," but the weather service says "if it moves farther south" it would mean more snow and less ice.

The weather service advises to keep up with the latest forecast as conditions evolve through the weekend.
