The majority of the 50 cats saved from a hoarding situation in the Town of Oconomowoc are now available for adoption, according to Jennifer Smeija, development coordinator for Humane Animal Welfare Society.

The cats were living in deplorable conditions and about 90 were euthanized after it was discovered an elderly woman had 144 cats.

A few of the cats remain in foster care or are recovering from “the sniffles,” according to Smieja.

The majority of the brown and gray tabbies available for adoption were rescued from the hoarding situation.

“We’ve had a tremendous response from the public so far and have been able to steadily adopt them out,” Smieja said in an email to Patch. “Our adoption fee strictly covers our costs for care and housing, so we especially appreciate that funding right now.”
