As 2011 comes to a close, Sussex Patch looks back at the top stories of the year, month by month. Here’s a recap of the news that made headlines in Sussex.

April welcomed the new Village President, Greg Goetz, and he was already making the rounds as the man in charge. Patch did a full feature profile on Goetz so Sussex residents could see the man in a whole new light. Read what he had planned in April and whether or not the Village has made the strides he anticipated. 

From one politician to another, Kathy Nickolaus said she wasn't resigning after the voter counting debacle. However, she was asking the Government Accountability Board and county auditor to help make changes to practices and procedures in her office. Nickolaus is still causing election controversy in the county in Dec.

Sussex and Town of Lisbon leaders said they have no active interest in merging despite calls for at least a partial merger by former town Chairman Mike Reed. Reed sent a letter to the State Incorporation Review Board saying Lisbon should just dissolve into the surrounding communities, however current officials didn't see that happening.

Former Waukesha County Employee Pleads Guilty to Theft

Kham Sisaleumsak pleaded guilty to nine counts of felony theft from the county’s Aging and Disability Resource Center dining donation account. The 45-year-old former Waukesha County employee embezzled more than $300,000 from the organization.

Area high school students competed against peers from across the world to see who can build the best robot. The Hamilton High School Chargers Robotics Team 537 finished its challenges in the FIRST Robotics national competition in St. Louis.

Diane Godnek-Knudson, 51,  drowned in April apparently while trying to rescue her dog, which had fallen through the ice on the pond at . Her 53-year-old husband, Richard Knudson, was rescued by firefighters along with his dog. Knudson reported that his wife was still under the ice after firefighters rescued him.
