Note to Sussex: I Think We are Good on Pubs Now...

I'd like to see a bit more variety in our dining options in Sussex. What do you think?

I truly love to see small businesses starting and growing during these economic times. The small businesses that start when things are tough should be applauded for their courage and tenacity to move forward. Jumping into the market and gambling that the market will bear your product is a major risk, and congratulations to any who take said gamble.

That being said, the opening of two new bar/grill type restaurants this year makes me curious as to why we have so many in a 2 mile space. From the start of town on the east end, we have , the Dive Bar--(I hear --stay tuned). The west end of town is anchored by the . In between there are 4 other bar and grill establishments, leading me to wonder why we need so many.

I ask this for two reasons. First, visitors to our fair village drive through our main street, and see 6 bars, a gas station, a , and a (my favorite store!). We have no restaurants that are oriented to families with younger children where the bar/grill atmosphere may not always be appropriate. To find a restaurant to take your family to, you have to travel to neighboring communities. I love the neighboring communities, but I prefer to spend my money in the city where I live.

What say ye? Am I making much ado about nothing? I enjoy the pub/grill as much as the next person, but when I want to take my kids or my grandparents out for a casual dining experience that is not a pub, my options shrink. I say before we open another pub and grill, can we start with a nice ice cream and donut shop? Or maybe this is my cue to get off my butt and gamble on my idea in the marketplace?
