is about to receive a pretty heafty gift. The non-profit is scheduled to get a palette of food valued at $5,884 and a check for $500 from the Roundy's Foundation.
The grocery giant is calling it the "Focused on Feeding Families Tour," and Sussex is set to get a slice of the generous pie. The tour will stop at the at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 27 before heading over to SOS. Four food pantries in the Sussex area, like Milwaukee and Mukwonago, are receiving similar treatment.
The total area donation is expected to total $25,536.
Overall, the tour will be making 14 stops in five days, beginning in Minneapolis, MN on April 23. In total, the Roundy’s Foundation will donate $257,000 in money and food to 60 food pantries in five days.
According to a release from Roundy's, the tour targets smaller, neighborhood pantries feeling the strain of the economy and increased demand. In addition, the Foundation is looking to raise awareness about the needs of area food pantries and, ultimately, provide one food pantry with a surprise donation through a “Recipe Face-Off” contest.
Fans of the Roundy’s Foundation Facebook page are invited to submit a recipe using five pre-selected ingredients that are commonly found at a food pantry. A panel of judges will then nominate the three top recipe submissions to move on to the final voting round. The final decision will be left up to the fans.
The top three recipes will be posted on Roundy’s Foundation Facebook page where participants vote for the winner by “Liking” their favorite recipe. A food donation will be placed by Roundy’s Foundation to a food pantry of the winner’s choice.
“We’re trying to bring attention to the issue of hunger in our communities, while giving our customers an easy way to give back,” said Roundy’s Chairman and CEO Bob Mariano. “The Recipe Face-Off brings a fun and interactive online aspect to the tour that will engage and educate followers.”
