Sussex Breaks Ground at Mammoth Springs

After two years of planning, construction crews will now begin digging and blasting on the Mammoth Springs site at Waukesha Avenue and Main Street.

After roughly two years of planning, collaborating, and designing, the massive Mammoth Springs develop project is under way.

Elected Sussex leaders, administrators, the Mammoth Springs project team, and curious onlookers attended a groundbreaking ceremony Monday at the corner of Waukesha Avenue and Main Street.

Over the next several months, ground will be blasted and shoveled away as the first of several residential and retail buildings are erected on the site. The $21.9 million project will receive $4.7 million from the village as part of a tax incremental finance district.

Site owner Arthur Sawall purchased the property in January 2010, and has plans to construct a seven-building complex with a mix of retail and residential spaces. The construction would occur in phases with two "high-end housing" buildings coming first. According to the proposal, new multifamily or commercial buildings would arise annually from 2014 through 2019.

The rental costs for apartments range from around $900 for a one-bedroom apartment, to $1,200 for a two-bedroom apartment.
