PHOTOS: Construction Starts at Sussex Clark Gas Station

After four months of prep work, the gas station on the corner of Main Street and Waukesha Avenue is finally beginning construction.

The Sussex Plan Commission approved the interior and exterior updates , and the Village Board did the same not long after. Crews from First Class Cement Contractors in Milwaukee are spearheading the project, saying they’re expecting to complete the cement work in a few days. Then they’ll begin laying the decorative brick.

However, don’t expect to snag some Mountain Dew and Cheetos until the site looks finished. A sign on the exterior of the building reads, “Thank you for your patronage. We will be closed during remodeling, we will reopen soon.”

And it’s not only the exterior getting an overhaul. The interior of the store will have an additional cooler and more space to walk around. However, the actual footprint of the store will remain the same because of zoning laws.

"I can't expand the actual store because of the nonconforming zoning it has, but we'll bump out a walk-in cooler and tear down some interior walls," business owner Sam Ansaree told Patch . "I'm really doing this to make it more comfortable for the people. If you have three guys in here, its tight, and you can almost touch both walls if you stretch your arms out."

The business is currently 410-square-feet, but the new bump-out cooler will add approximately 90 additional square feet. 

New brick walls will also be built to conceal a space for ice storage and the propane tank. In the end, Ansaree said the store will feel much larger and include more shopper-friendly amenities without actually expanding the gas station's footprint on the lot.
