PHOTOS: Art Student of the Month, Kim Winter

Dear Editor,

I just wanted to start off saying thank you to everyone who was involved in giving me this award. Even though it was a huge surprise to me, I am very honored. 

Throughout my four years at I have completed three art classes: Photos, Stained Glass and Advanced Glass. After exploring the two mediums, I am more drawn to glass because I like taking my ideas, creating them with my hands and melting them into three-dimensional forms.  

Stained Glass taught me how to be accurate and precise as well as the Tiffany method of construction. Advanced Stained Glass focuses more on the process of heating/melting glass and 3D pieces.

As I complete high school this year, it is hard to visualize my future without art in it. I have decided to take some art courses in college to keep it as a lifelong hobby. This summer I am already planning on doing some side stained glass projects with the help of my neighbor who also works with glass.

My best experience(s) with art might seem cliché, but it would have to be when I show my family my artwork. It makes me happy to see how amazed they are and question how certain things were done.

It’s worthwhile when you have been working really hard on one project, finally get to finish it and show everyone around you. All of the frustration and problem solving really pays off when you see others marvel at your work.

My artwork reflects me as a person and my surroundings. My inspiration comes a lot from my feelings and personal experiences that I have encountered. Every piece has a meaning that is special.

Some artists acquire their inspiration from nature or words in a book, but I spend a time with my family and an idea evolves. My mom is my primary inspiration and a focus for most of my work. She helps me and gives me great pointers.

I find art to truly be an expression of feeling and emotions through design, and I am happy I am able to share it with everyone.
