National Night Out events will take place across the country this week in an effort to help communities fight back against crime. This marks the second year the event will be held in conjunction with the ice cream social.

Janice Gutbrod, president of the Friends of the Pauline Haass Public Library, said the ice cream social is the organization’s way of thanking the community for supporting the library. Attendees of the social will receive a free brownie with ice cream and topping, and a soda.

A small tent will also be available where residents can purchase used books, music will be played and children’s activities will take place behind the library, where youths can win prizes.

“It’s a wonderful event,” Gutbrod said. “It’s my favorite thing just to see that we get people of all ages. It’s wonderful to see at the picnic tables or in the grass and on the blankets the young couples and the older couples sitting there.”

Gutbrod said volunteers from will help scoop ice cream and members of the Leo’s Club will patrol the grounds to pick up trash.
