Strap on Your Running Shoes for Good Cause

The village is having its fourth annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday to raise money for the recreational scholarship fund.

Do a couple stretches, warm up and prepare yourself for Sussex’s fourth annual this Saturday.

The event starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Lion’s Open Air Pavilion in Sussex , and after trekking through Sussex’s suburban roads, the race will end there also.

Although the race was started in conjunction with the 50-year anniversary of the village park, it has remained an annual event since then mainly to support the recreation scholarship fund.

“In 2010, we raised just over $4,000 for the scholarship fund,” said Megan Sackett, Sussex’s recreation program director. “Our average amount of participants is around 185 which we expect to surpass this year based on current registration numbers.”

So far 145 people are registered for this year’s race. It costs $24 to register, but skilled runners have a chance of getting that money back. The top male and top female runner will receive gift certificates for InStep running stores.

Medals will be awarded to the top three male and top three female runners, and a little award ceremony will be held at the end of the run.

However, everyone is a winner for participating. Each runner or walker will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt for supporting the scholarship fund.
