Pauline Haass Public Library Expands eBooks to Kindle

The is joining the eBook party, now offering the service for people using the world’s bestselling eBook reader, the Amazon Kindle.

Using a subscription to an online service, all the libraries in the state had access to the eBook library for the past 18 months. This is the first week the online service added the Kindle to the mix.

According to the library’s Head of Adult Services, Becky Murray, the service is easy and a lot like a real library, only it’s open around the clock.

“The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so you’re not limited to library hours,” Murray said. “You still need a library card to use it, and there are still checkout periods. You don’t get to keep the book forever. You have up to 14 days to read the book.”

Just like a real library, there are a certain amount of copies because of publishing rights, and sometimes there’s a waiting list. However, it’s the convenience of browsing and choosing a new book from home that draws the most people.

Using the eBook system is currently free to anyone with a valid library card and a device to view the book on.

Bookworms can use the service on a Kindle or any gadget with the free Kindle application, like an iPad, iPhone, or Android device. Readers can also use the service to download books and even audiobooks on their computers, MP3 players, or other types of eBook readers.

With so many ways to read the content, Murray says the service might also be getting an upgrade.

“The library gives them money to be a part of it,” said Murray. “But with the Kindle added, they’re hoping to put more money towards it so they can beef-up the collection.”
