Sussex resident earns highest Girl Scout honor with "Band Buddies" project

Milwaukee - Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) has awarded Sussex resident and Girl Scout Miranda Brown the highest award in Girl Scouting–the Girl Scout Gold Award. Girl Scouts who receive this award are challenged to complete a variety of requirements and carry out a project that meets an expressed need in the community and beyond.

By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Brown has become a community leader. Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart.

As an active band member at her high school, Brown was frustrated by the decreasing level of participation in the school’s band program. She decided to create a program, “Band Buddies,” in which groups of high school band students travel to an elementary school and mentor fifth grade students who are just beginning their musical journeys. Her hope is that by educating younger students about the importance of band and portraying how exciting music can be, these younger students will be inspired to continue to participate in band into middle and high school.

“By completing my project, I will be more willing and confident to take on new leadership positions in college and my future career,” said Brown. “I will use what I have learned to improve my leadership skills for future endeavors.”

A Girl Scout who has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches.

This year, GSWISE recognized nine girl members for earning their Girl Scout Gold Award.
