Pawn Off Your Kids For the Day (And the Knight)

Sussex Scholastic Chess Camp offers kids in grades 2-12 the opportunity to learn the ultimate thinking game.

Could your kids stand to learn a little patience? (All parents nod furiously.) Perhaps one way for them to learn is by playing chess, a game requiring forethought and a degree of restraint.

Registration continues this week for the Sussex Scholastic Chess Camp, next Monday-Wednesday at Sussex United Methodist Church. It’s just $75 and students are busy each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit Wisconsin Scholastic Chess for more.

Here is more information for Sussex residents should know to improve their quality of life this week.

  • Monday could be steamy but then cooler weather kicks back in. WISN 12 News forecasters project a quiet week beginning Tuesday, with highs between 72-75 for the most part. Last week’s heat wave is long gone.
  • You should always know when your Village Board meets. The panel convenes at 7 p.m. Tuesday for its regular meeting. There are not any five-star items on this agenda, but citizens always are welcome to make their voices heard during the open comment section of the meeting.
  • The four-day extravaganza known as Falls Fest begins Thursday next door in Menomonee Falls. You can catch Chasin’ Mason, Rebel Grace and Sweet Tarts in concert, plus the Sunday night fireworks.
  • Finally, it will officially become football season (when is it not, really?) as the Green Bay Packers begin training camp on Friday. You can go see the team practice for free, weather permitting. Here is the complete practice schedule.
