Kathy Bero, founder and board president of NuGenesis Farm, will present Food as Medicine: The True Healthcare Reform at noon Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha.

The lecture will be held in Commons 101. The event is free and open to the public, and free parking is available during the lecture. UW-Waukesha is located at 1500 N. University Drive in Waukesha.

Bero will share information about the Pewaukee-based NuGenesis Farm, the mission of which is to “create a community-based model of education, sustainable organic agriculture and research centered on food as medicine.”

Bero said NGF works daily to teach people to make informed decisions that will play a key role in preventing chronic illness and reducing health care costs just by eating high quality food. NGF’s programs promote personal empowerment through interactive education.

Bero holds degrees in journalism and environmental sciences from UW-Madison. Her own battle with stage-4 inflammatory breast cancer, infiltrating ductal carcinoma and a high-grade epidermoid carcinoma in her parotid gland have led her to a deep understanding that true health care reform begins with the type of foods we eat. She has written many educational works including the national award-­winning curriculum It’s All Connected and the children’s book A Place at the Fire. After a 25-­year advocacy career and several years of television production work, Bero began her battle with cancer. The healing properties of food became a part of her personal treatment plan and roadmap for her present advocacy work. 

Bero executive produced the double Emmy Award winning 1998 documentary Worth Fighting For and has received many state and national awards for her work as an environmental agent of change. She has served on many local and national boards of directors, including the Angiogenesis Foundation Advisory Board and Stillwaters Cancer Support Center.
