I Have Come To Chew Bubble Gum And Recall The Governor . . . And I'm All Out Of Bubble Gum!

When I ask myself, "Are you really going to give up your free time after work and on weekends to stand out there in the cold and snow in the middle of the Wisconsin winter, take abusive name-calling and rude gestures by passers-by to collect signatures to recall a man who has only been in office less than a year?"

The answer is a simple: Hell Yes!!!

I am not a union member or a state employee, but I understand the difference between right and wrong and I do not take kindly to bullies. I thank my grandfather for that.

My grandpa was raised during the depression and went on to fight in Korea and came home to raise a large family while working two or three jobs at a time to keep afloat, until his company was sold to new owners, who promptly let all non-union employees go. My grandfather was not a member of the union, so at the ripe age of 57, he was off to look for a new line of work and found it in heavy construction - a job that offered no benefits or insurance (thanks Reganomics).

Needless to say, more than half of his check went towards catastrophic insurance policies for himself and my grandmother. And since they were my guardians, I also had no insurance. I learned one life lesson early on - when someone tries to kick you around, fight back!

I can understand and have empathy with those who might need a little assistance now and then in the form of BadgerCare or Medicaid. I empathize with those who wish to belong to a union to ensure livable wages and decent benefits. I empathize with those who cannot afford private schools or who simply believe in the diversity and mission of public schools to educate all children.

So you can bet your butt I will be out there on street corners and in front of shopping centers asking for your signature to recall a man who has:

  • Cut $1.6 Billion from public education
  • Diverted $41 Million from public ed to voucher and charter schools
  • Slashed $500 Million from Medicaid and BadgerCare
  • Destroyed public unions in an effort to de-fund campaign donations to Democrats
  • Rear-ended every state-worker from Kenosha to Rhinelander by cutting take-home pay by 10%
  • Vilified teachers by demeaning their profession and insulting their intelligence
  • Taken a phony phone call from billionaire polluter "David Koch" and admitted he "thought about" bringing in fake agitators to the peaceful demonstrations in Madison.
  • Has the worst haircut and bald spot in state government

Now, you don't have to agree with the movement to recall Scott Walker, and you certainly do not have to sign the petition, but if you love America and what it stands for, please respect our right to petition the government for redress of grievances.

Oh, and no "outside agitators" please. We like to run a clean fight.

You surely jest, as it is the very union thugs of which you speak so adoringly, that are bringing in the outsiders. I think your Grandfather would be anything but proud of your actions. He sounds like a commonsense guy who valued hard work and effort over shenanigans like fleeing the state for weeks to avoid doing what you were elected to do. Or, bringing in thousands of people and millions of dollars to try to shift the focus away from the true hubris of union leaders and members who were more than happy to stir the pot in efforts to protect a circular system or rewards with contributions in exchange for favorable votes on increasing taxes for the taxpaying workers in WI. Why should public sector workers at the state level be allowed to have the privilege (it's not a right) to collective bargain when their Federal peers are not? It is a trying time for everyone, but esp. the poor downtrodden workers of the state who are tired of seeing their hard earned paychecks after TAXES are deducted. I voted for and support Governor Walker, along with the 1,128,940 other people who voiced their opinion last November. So, if you wish to spend your time lobbying for a different kind of Wisconsin, it is your privilege (again, not a right). I just hope your grandkids will understand why they had to move away from WI.

Hi Jason. I too will be out there working against the recall. Look for the sign that says:
Asked to sign?
Just say NO!
Scott Walker cannot go.

He can't go cause he is doing what thousands of us elected him to do and doing it well. We want a balanced budget and an environment where jobs grow. Ask the out of state recall backers to stay home and keep their money at home and we will have a playing field where Wisconsin Citizens can decide for themselves. Stay warm!

I support Gov. Walker and will be fighting back on the frivolous and mean spirited recall started because a group of entitled government workers had to join the real world.I work for a union and I understand they are all for themselves. Go get them Scott and those that can donate today.

I completely agree that Scott Walker has a bully approach to his leadership. I feel it is his revenge on the state since he was bullied himself by the Common Council when he served as County Exec. However, I also refuse to be bullied by the petitioners asking me to sign a petition for this totally ridiculous attempt to orchestrate a wasteful, expensive recall. I'm taking bets on how quickly Scott Walker will move his wife and family far away from Wisconsin when his term is over...

WEAC is one of the biggest bullies in this state. They bullied school districts and taxpayers to over pay for health insurance for many years. Schools districts all over this state are now saving thousands of dollars because they are no longer bullied by WEAC. No matter the outcome of this recall, the cat is out of the bag and no taxpayer will stand for their antics ever again.

If school districts are saving thousands as you claim, why have districts statewide experienced a 3,368 person reduction in staff K-12? No layoffs some say??? Hmmm..... Why do 2/3 of the districts say they are expected to make the same or even greater cuts next year? These cuts mean that 4 in 10 students attend a district with larger class sizes in gr K-6. The cuts mean districts are offering fewer art, music, PE, AP, tech ed, and foreign language classes. If they are saving so much money, why are 40% of students in districts that have either eliminated sections or increased class size for the core subjects of English, Math, Science and Social Studies? These things would not be happening if districts had the money to keep programs in place. THEY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY!! Roughly 3 in 4 students attend a district where essential support programs were cut: the biggest cuts were to special ed programs, library and media center staff, reading programs, programs for at-risk youth, and drug and alcohol abuse programs. School districts did not need help balancing their budgets - they ALWAYS BALANCE THEIR BUDGETS! Yes, the State needed to balance its budget, and balance it they did!! by making sweeping changes to funding for public education!! But at what cost? I would not call WEAC the biggest bully in the state! (This info is from a survey conducted this fall by The Wis. Assoc. of School Dsitrict Admin. with 83% of school districts responding.)

@marybeth mack -

From what I understand, a majority of the 'lay-offs' coming from districts that have fully implemented Walker's tools are solely because of attrition and reduced enrollment.

Do you have any actual proof of cut programs or students being effected by the cuts, or just numbers that you are attempting to draw a correlation from? Throwing money at something doesn't always equate to receiving the best quality possible, does it?

Joana, where can I get a sign like you describe? I will post it at my business on Janesville Road. Jason says what he doesn't do, but he didn't mention what he does do. He's surely not a business person trying to provide jobs for others. I am concerned everyda about the livelihood of others. I appreciate the progress Governor Walker has made in tis short amount of time. Why should public employees not have to contribute to their own retirement as the rest of us have to do? Right on Governor Walker! He's doing the job he was elected to do.
(We found out how childish Jason is when he commented on Governor Walker's hairstyle.) This is the mentality we're up against to try to restore this country's values and financial security.

Jason, for someone who claims that this is an historic (as opposed to hysteric) moment, learn your history. It's "Reaganomics." Unless, of course, you are referring to Donald Regan, who was Secretary of the Treasury under President Reagan.

Well, I suppose you can rationalize anything. Even hating someone for his haircut. Which extends itself to mean-spirited actions like protesting someone's family home. Is this the new normal, Jason? We see through the union-backed beligerant tactics already, even before you joined their ranks out of mis-guided sympathy. Guilt-ridden liberals are a dime a dozen. No news here!

I think the Bigger Picture here, is the breaking down of Unions and the control over negotiations. Scott Walker is making the Democratic Unions week and we have awaken a monster.

Let's take a look at the list:
'Cut $1.6 Billion from public education' Far less than Doyle's cuts--why didn't you try to get him recalled?

'Diverted $41 Million from public ed to voucher and charter schools' Not true. http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/statements/2011/jul/13/peter-barca/wisconsin-state-rep-peter-barca-says-assembly-vote/

'Slashed $500 Million from Medicaid and BadgerCare' Walker increased state spending for Medicaid by $1.2 billion

'Destroyed public unions in an effort to de-fund campaign donations to Democrats' Weakened, but not destroyed. Personally, I like the idea of not allowing them to funnel tax dollars to the Democratic party.

'Rear-ended every state-worker from Kenosha to Rhinelander by cutting take-home pay by 10%' I thought 8% was the actual number, but I'll give you that one. How many private sector workers have had similar cuts to take home pay or benefit contribution increases in recent years?

'Vilified teachers by demeaning their profession and insulting their intelligence' How so?

'Taken a phony phone call from billionaire polluter "David Koch" and admitted he "thought about" bringing in fake agitators to the peaceful demonstrations in Madison.' 'Thinking about (if you can really call it that) and doing it are very different things.

'Has the worst haircut and bald spot in state government' A pretty petty thing to bring up, isn't it?

An update on the recall process in Greendale and the surrounding suburbs:

I won't say exactly how many signatures we have collected in less than 24 hours, but if each signature were a dollar bill, we could afford a new ipad . . . and these are some of the most popular sayings I have had shouted at me:
"Get a job." (Thanks, but I already have two of them)
"Go f*ck yourself!" (I am not a hermaphrodite)
"You teachers should be fired." (none of us collecting signatures were teachers)

And props to the Franklin Police Department who tracked down and ticketed the young men who yelled profanities and threw a full can of soda at my head . . . and also to the Greendale Police Department who have been cooperative and fair thus far.

And a "Good day and God bless" to the hundreds of fellow suburbanites who have given me the old one finger salute - especially the mom driving the Cadillac SUV who pushed her young son back so she could extend the finger right outside his passenger window. See you out there tomorrow . . .

How nice that the police will actually do something about people behaving badly in Greendale but not at Governor Walker's home or in Madison. Perhaps civility would be more apparent if that happened. It's not right for one group (ant-Walkerites) to enjoy the benefit of police action against bullying and the other (Walker, his family and supporters) to be treated with incivility on a daily basis.

LOL, Such nonsense. C'mon folks, give Jason a break. He's not attacking you personally, so don't attack him on a personal level. It's OK for us to disagree, but let's keep it civil.

While civilized persons might be apt to agree with your sentiments, it is bothersome that Gov. Walker and his family are not afforded the same modicum of decency. Let's ask all sides to keep the level of discourse at a political ideas differences.

Latest Polling shows that Yes indeed, Walker will be recalled:
"The Wisconsin Public Radio/St. Norbert College Survey was released the same day that Democrats, labor unions and others, angry over his moves to curb union rights, began circulating petitions to get the 540,000 signatures needed to force a recall election next year.

The poll showed that 58 percent of respondents believe Walker should be recalled from office. That compares with 47 percent who said in April that he should be recalled.

The growth in support for a recall came, surprisingly, from Republicans. In the spring, only 7 percent of Republicans supported recalling Walker but that grew to 24 percent in the fall. Support among Democrats held mainly steady at 88 percent in the spring and 92 percent in the fall." ~ http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-poll-shows-most-favor-recall-of-wisconsin-governor-20111116,0,6633196.story

I am continually shocked that the people of this great state would disenfranchise their fellow taxpayers their legal right to protest their elected officials. It is the very essence of democracy and a hallmark of this great republic.

It is as simple as this: if you are passionate about this issue, on either side of the aisle, go stand and make your position count. Simply telling someone they should not express their opinion within the existing legal framework is not only un-American, its counter-productive.
