Anyone tried Boneyard Pub & Grille?

Last Thursday was a crazy evening with the kids after school events, therefore we decided to check out the newest restaurant addition, the Boneyard Pub & Grille. I was one of the sad Sussex residents when Seigo's closed it's doors as we would often frequent their sushi bar. But after reading reviews from Boneyard's other location, I was looking forward to trying it.

As we arrived there, we were asked to wait 10 to 15 minutes which ended up being more like over 20 minutes. With my toddler being impatient I decided to walk around with her back and forth and noticed that the restaurant wasn't even that full with quite a few tables empty.

Also I had asked the nice lady at the entrance what I needed to do to learn more about their fundraiser program for our daughters' dance school. She let me know that one of the managers would talk to me shortly. We left without ever meeting any manager.

We finally got seated and to my surprise they did not have booster seats, only high chairs! Ok... interesting. Also there were ONLY 8 tables filled and 4 waitresses. Still do not get why we had to wait such a long time.

We decided to try all types of foods; this way we would get a feeling for their food. Now prior to my commenting on my thoughts about the food, I am the first one to recognize that I AM a food snob, but the way I see it is that if I am going to a restaurant I expect good food. I LOVE to cook and LOVE to eat. And the restaurant type does not matter as long as it is good. For example I will take M&M anyday. LOVE their food and atmosphere. But that's another future post.

Here is a list of what we ordered:

  • Two cokes with lemon slices: she forgot the lemon slices!
  • One unsweetened ice tea: machine broken, so it was not fresh brewed but syrup type.
  • Jalapeño poppers: the jalapeño itself was soggy and the cream cheese was just that, not spices or anything in it. Very bland. And the very first time I had them where they did not even have a bite to them.
  • Portabella Mushrooms: extremely greasy and heavy on the breading, so barely any taste of the mushroom.
  • Wonton Wrapped Mozzarella Sticks: in the description is says a "...thin wonton. Served with marinara sauce." The marinara sauce never made it to the table and I would not call it thin wonton as it was pretty well wrapped in them. Actually I think each cheese stick must have had at least two layers of wonton. Also again extremely greasy.
  • Half a Rack Ribs: this may have been the best thing we ate. They were juicy and tender.
  • Buffalo wings: we decided to order two types of sauces, the dry jerk, which was actually pretty tasty and the Insane Buffalo which I was expecting to be spicy and was not, so not sure if they messed up our order or they are simply not spicy, certainly not insane. I told the waitress about it and she brought a small sample of the spiciest sauce, which indeed was extremely spicy but no taste whatsoever. Just spicy hot. So absolutely not impressed. I would take the Buffalo Wild Wings over anyday. At least they ARE spicy BUT also have taste.
  • Seafood Pasta: in my mind this was the biggest disappointment. The pasta was way overcooked and there were merrily 6 shrimps in the whole plate. The shrimps were small and tasteless. It came with a salad as a side where you could see that the lettuce was not the freshest.

As sad as this makes me to say, unless they shape up and I hear from others this place will get better, I will not bother going back there.

I would never go to a new restaurant myself and or with small children the 1st week it opens...no excuses for the poor service and the bad food, but you should wait a couple weeks until the restaurant works out the kinks. I hope people give the place another chance. The restaurant business is tough which I know from personal experience. One mistake that a lot of places make is not doing a few dry runs with friends and family...they probably need to do that if they haven't already.

Victoria I totally agree with you. I too have worked restaurant and catering and know well the business. I DO hope it does shape up ad get better as it would be a pity for it not to make it as I am sure they invested quite a bit in it. And I will certainly go back if I hear that the food/service improves.

My wife and son went last week, and thought it had promise. We each had burgers, which I thought were juicy and well prepared. Certainly better than the dry, hard, burgers that we had had when Rumors opened. The appetizers were alright as well. My son prefers breaded Mozzarella sticks, but thought that these were very good. Perhaps an off night for you? We also had a couple of other appetizers, we tried the "Buffalo Bites" which I though had a nice kick and the fried cheese curds. To be fair, it's hard to screw up fried cheese curds. I look forward to trying a few different things in the near future, and I hope the breakfasts turn out as it would be nice to have a new option for breakfast in town.

Chris, I am glad you had a good experience and DO hope it will end up being a success. Whenever you go back again, I would love to hear if you had luck again. I am totally for trying it again in the future once I hear more good reviews about it.

We had a very similar experience on Saturday. We were told the wait would be about 15 minutes and it was double that. Tough with kids, our fault, we should have went somewhere else. When we ordered the burgers were pretty undercooked, the meals were missing side dishes and we had to ask for forks and napkins after our food came. The server was very nice though. Maybe some practice will make perfect :) We will wait a while before heading back.

Shannon, my thoughts exactly. Our waitress was also very kind.

"Soft opens" are ALWAYS a good idea and speaking from experience, it was the norm wherever I worked. This week or two of trial and error allows for front and back of house to get to square one..which is basically making everything on the menu and seeing the "flow" of service as it transcends to the dining room..I went on Packer Sunday and watched the game over bloodies at the bar. GREAT Audio and Video (great job Joel)..Good Bloody Mary's and the wings were tasty. The tough part it seems,(bar is a tad easier to run and please patrons), will be getting the "family" part of the equation down pat. Sussex residents are a tough crowd to please and with all the Sussex families heading out to eat, The Boneyard better appeal to these families,through quality menu preparation and quality service. Word spreads fast in this little hollow..(;

Blain, I totally agree with your comments. Indeed I do hope that they do get everything organized as it would be the perfect solution for families with younger children.

We went back tonight as a family and enjoyed our meal. My son had a burger again, which he liked again. I tried the Asian Chicken wrap this time (no oranges for me) and thought it was very good. For my side I tried the potato logs this time...an odd choice for a dinner side, they'll go better with breakfast fare when they introduce it. My wife had cajun chicken alfredo pasta which she liked also. And finally my daughter had the pizza panini. We had an appetizer of the buffalo bites which we enjoyed again. Although the parking lot was packed, we were seated immediately and our food was brought to us in a reasonable amount of time. Our server was very conscientious, even to the point of making sure our food was the proper temperature all the way through. He stated that they were still getting the "knack" of some thing and he wanted to make sure that everything was satisfactory for us. The dining room is pleasant enough, but it needs some more decor...with the wide open floors it struck me that I felt like I was at a party in a rented hall rather than a restaurant. I think they'll be able to address that as time goes on. I hope that more people post their opinions as I think a wide variety of opinions can only help them. From a self-admitted "foodie" like Sofia, to someone like me that isn't as discerning. I'm hopeful that they'll hit their stride.

Chris, thanks for your thoughts. This certainly makes me want to go back, but perhaps after the holidays and see how I feel about it again. One thing I did NOT mention is that the prices are VERY competitive.

We just had lunch their and our group of 7 all ordered the wing special. From the time that the waitress entered the order in to the register until the food arrived at our table it was 40-45 minutes. They weren't busy there were only three other tables with 2 people each. After we finished eating and the waitress cam over it took another 10-15 minutes to get the bills ready. I feel this is unacceptable due to the long wait for the food. The order also came out all mixed up because the wings had different types of sauce and it took another 10 minutes to get all the wings out to the table. The wings were fairly delicious though. The fries weren't very good. I feel this place is destined for failure.

We orderd , food came late and the coffee was old and lukewarm , ask for new cup was told waitess would make another pot , she didn't . I had to ask for water and the waitess came with a glass of water and a straw . Ask waitess for gravy for mash potatos and she said sure , when my chicken/ mash potato came out I ask about gravy and she told me they didn't have any . Was told only Mash potatos came with the meal !! The coleslaw was sour and bitter and the corn in a paper cup was cold. The corn bread square was hard as a rock . If this place last out the new year I 'll be surprise. The place has 20 Tvs I kid you not , the electric bill must be high and they had alot of employees standing around talking and doing anything . Trying to turn into the place off main your can't . There are many places to eat within blocks of this place with a new place @ the old Hardee's , and other bars type food . Again I don't think they will make it . Sorry we ate there !!

We went there with the family. Burgers were pretty good, but the fries, the special sweet potato fries, were cold.. When we first sat down we asked for controllers to play trivia, and we never got them throughout the whole night. Employees were standing around with general disinterest in customer service. As far as I can see, customers are viewed as a little bit more of a necessity, or porentisl inconvenience, as opposed to a "how can we wow them" type of approach. In my opinion this place is a good place to watch football at the bar.. have food at the bar ..and basically watch big screens..at the bar. So maybe it's a better bar?

we have eaten there 2 x and I thought my Panini (i think it was named the godfather) was delicious. Not greasy like Nino's in the Falls. I can't remember what my husband had but he said he liked it. We are not very fussy so maybe that is why we enjoyed it. The service could be a little better but we are retired so are not usually in a hurry.

We recently went to the Mukwonago location...worse than Sussex! After ordering gluten free and being served gluten, asked to speak to the manager who said they don't offer anything gluten free, although it says gluten free clearly on their menu. He did then change his tune and say they had gluten free sauces. I asked "what do you want me to do, drink a cup of Jerk"? How naive are people? The wings my daughter and husband ordered were cold. They did reduce the bill, but after a bad experience in Sussex and now in Mukwonago, we will NEVER go back!

I agree with the D- rating. I, too, went during their soft opening and the food was horrible. Several of my friends told me that I needed to give it another shot, so I've gone back 2 more times. Service is horrible, food is just as bad. I will not go back. I think 3 times is enough of a chance. I'm done.

Why can't Sussex get any good restaurants? We are forced to go to Delafield, Brookfield, or Oconomowoc, or drive into Milwaukee to get good food.

Funny you should say "why doesn't Sussex get any good restaurants" I say that about Menomonee Falls.

BUT I went to Rumors on Mon or Tues. and had a hamburger which I thought was very good and the so were the Fries. Can't remember what husband had but he liked it - although he said the Sweet potatoes Fries were not great. Their chips with the hamburger were not good but shouldn't have eaten them anyway. Hamburger was delicious and 10oz.

Boneyard I like - service was lousy but have eaten there 3 x and loved their Paninni.

Also went to Ho's at the American Legion in Pewaukee and they had an awesome Pepperoni sandwich (I think it was called that) and husband said it was terrific. Again I had a hamburger and fried which were both great. (sounds like we eat out a lot)

O'Bradys in the Falls has the best burgers! I really like their pastas too so if yo'ure looking for a place in the Falls try it out.
Boneyards service needs help still. This isn't their first restaurant so there shouldn't be that many kinks to work out and they should know what they are doing by now.

@Pat and MF Girl: I feel the same one. We may have been one of the few clients of the sushi bar when it was still Seigo's. We loved it. Wish we could have a GOOD Northern Italian restaurant, an Indian and so on. A variety would be so very nice.
