Patch's Art Student of the Month, Kim Winter, shares her favorite pieces of glass work and explains what art means to her in her student testimonial.

Dear Editor, I just wanted to start off saying thank you to everyone who was involved in giving me this award. Even though it was a huge surprise to me, I am very honored.  Throughout my four years at Hamilton I have completed three art classes: Photos, Stained Glass and Advanced Glass. After exploring the two mediums, I am more drawn to glass because I like taking my ideas, creating them with my hands and melting them into three-dimensional forms.   Stained Glass taught me how to be accurate and precise as well as the Tiffany method of construction. Advanced Stained Glass focuses more on the process of heating/melting glass and 3D pieces. As I complete high school this year, it is hard to visualize my future without art in it. I have …

Falls' Concerts in the Park Series Returns in June

Mark your calendars for the shows you want to see throughout the summer in downtown Menomonee Falls.

It’s been a tradition in Menomonee Falls for well over a decade, and in June the village’s annual Concerts in the Park series opens for another season of free live music downtown. This year, The Pink Flamingoes will kick off the Tuesday evening concert series from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 7 in the gazebo at Village Park. Live concerts will be held on Thursday evenings as well as Friday afternoons until the middle of August. The Friday afternoon concerts will all be held from noon to 1 p.m. at Mill Pond Park on the west side of the river. Thursday Evenings Each concert is played from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the gazebo in Village Park. Students Reach a Musical Milestone

Annual "Jazz ‘n Java" event turns 10 on May 19.

“Jazzland…It’s Musically Delicious!”  will be the theme of the 10th annual Jazz ‘n Java evening sponsored by the Band Bunch. The sweetest musical event of the year will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the Menomonee Falls High School cafeteria. Throughout the evening Jazz Ensembles from North Middle School and Menomonee Falls High School will entertain with large and small group ensembles, including performances with clinician Adam Gaines. An amazing array of cupcakes and a variety of drinks will be available to purchase all evening. Raffles will be held throughout the night with proceeds benefitting the district’s band program. PHOTOS: Murder-Mystery to be Performed at Hamilton

“Any Number Can Die” is the latest play slated for the Hamilton Fine Arts Center, and the students in the drama department are putting on the finishing touches before the show opens on Thursday.

Students in the Hamilton Drama Department are frantically putting the finishing touches on their latest work of art during the last few days of rehearsal before the big show. As the actors take their places and recite their lines, crew members continue to paint, screw and saw to ensure every detail is perfect for opening night on Thursday. The show runs Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hamilton Fine Arts Center. The spring play is called “Any Number Can Die,” and it’s described as a hilarious take off on the mystery plays of the twenties complete with sliding panels, robed figures, wills being read at midnight and more. Four ingenious murders take place in an island mansion as a pair of elderly detectives …

Jazz is Alive and Well for Three Hamilton Students

Three Hamilton High School students are recognized for outstanding improvisational jazz solos at a state jazz festival.

Hamilton High School Jazz Ensemble performed March 30-April 1 at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival held at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, and three students were recognized for outstanding work on improvisational solos: The Eau Claire Jazz Festival has maintained a standard of excellence in jazz education and performance earning its distinction as one of the oldest and largest jazz festivals in the nation. The Hamilton Jazz Ensemble received feedback from recognized leaders in jazz education and participated in a variety of workshops, master classes and concerts.  The Hamilton Jazz Ensemble will perform May 16 at the All District Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast at Maple Avenue Elementary School.

Hamilton Students Advance to State Music Festival

Nearly 30 Hamilton High School students earned the right to advance to the state music festival on April 28 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Hamilton High School music students participated March 17 in the North Shore District Solo and Ensemble Music Festival held at Homestead High School, and 28 students are advancing to the state festival. Students entered as individual soloists, part of an ensemble or both. A Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) judge rated them on a I-V system with I as the highest. Students who performed music from Class A were eligible to receive a *I rating denoting that they will advance to the state music festival April 28 at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A Gibson Guitar You Won't Find Anywhere Else

Menomonee Falls resident, Pat Mitchell, was one of 20 artists to design a Gibson Les Paul guitar to auction this summer as part of the celebration to honor Waukesha's designation as a Gibson GuitarTown.

It was only fitting that for the past six weeks Falls resident Pat Mitchell labored in her basement workshop donning her Gibson guitar work shirt and rocking to the tunes of Otis Redding, Darrell Scott and John Mayer in the background. Mitchell was one of 20 artists around the state chosen to use her artistic talents to design a one-of-a-kind playable Gibson Les Paul guitar. The 20 artists will showcase and auction their handiwork June 1 in Waukesha, the birth and resting place of Les Paul, and the latest Gibson GuitarTown. Mitchell, a professional fine art mosaic artist, grinded 2,239 small pieces of glass by hand to create a heart-themed mosaic on an electric Gibson Les Paul model. Local Schools Take the Stage for Three Upcoming Productions

Mark your calendars for three upcoming performances by three different schools in the Hamilton School District. The youngest students from Woodside are event set to perform Disney's musical, Aladdin.

Hamilton High School Drama Department Performance dates: May 3 - 5 at 7 p.m., and May 6 at 2 p.m. Any Number Can Die is described as a “A hilarious take off on the mystery plays of the twenties complete with sliding panels, robed figures, wills being read at midnight, etc. Four ingenious murders take place in an island mansion as a pair of elderly detectives set to work on their first case. The ever popular storm, the unexpected guests, the cryptic poem, and the missing fortune all add to the intricate and inventive mystery off which the laughs bounce." This production is set to be performed at the Hamilton Fine Arts Center, and is sponsored in part by the Hamilton Education Foundation.
