What's Your Take On The Proposed Meijer Store?
Support and opposition have voiced their position, now it's your turn to speak your mind about the project.
Some say the Meijer big box will be a welcomed addition to the community by providing much needed jobs and spurring more business. Others say the store will take business away from local entrepreneurs and create traffic issues.
What's your take on the almost 200,000-square-foot Meijer store being proposed at the corner of Highway K and 164? Vote in the poll and share your thoughts below in the comments.

I don't think you should have to join patch in order to vote. Clearly it is just abouit your building your email base and not about getting the opinions of your readers.

M W, very interesting comment given that I didn't know that you had to sign up to vote. I actually was thinking that this would spur some conversation about the project and a reader asked for a poll to be put up on the subject.

I'm of mixed feelings on this. I'm all for competition to Pick N Save, as well as other stores. However, I don't know if we have the customers to support everything we already have. If something else goes out of business, we then have more empty stores and blight. I do NOT want 164 to turn in to Bluemound Road. Conversely, it would be handy to have something that operates 24 hours/day nearby rather than having to run to Woodman's for anything after 9/10pm. Short & Sweet...I'd like to see competition, but I don't want to see "too much, too fast" and have Sussex suffer for it in the long run.

FYI -- Pick n' Save is open until 11 pm and Super Walmart is open 24 hours a day. So you do not need to drive to Woodman's to shop after 9/10 pm.

Fair enough, but I'm not a big fan of Pick N Save (as noted in my comments) and where is there a Super Walmart in Sussex?

Chris -- Super Walmart is on Hwy Q & Appleton (Germantown/Meno Falls) about 7 miles from Sussex.

I would think that Meijer's site selection and development team has surveyed the area to see if the area would be able to support a store before they commit to any type of investment in a new store. Competition is good and I would rather see a "Big Box" store that an empty field or more small retail spaces that just remain empty.

Then you would also assume Shopko did the same surveying of the area before it built, and it is now for sale! If you would rather see Big Box rather than trees, guess you should reside in the city and not a small village.

The fact that Shopko is for sale is more in line with the fact that the whole corporation is in trouble financially. Additional traffic on 164 will aid Shopko and Kohls more than hurt them.

I don't care what they put there, but give me a decent grocery store where your fruits and vegetables last more than a day!

O yes that would be nice I am getting tired of throwing away fruit and vegs. Pick n Saves have been awful lately.

@PH - I think that has more to do with the terrible growing season that has existed for almost everyone this year. If they have quality meat however, I will shop there as Pick N Save's fresh meats are gross.

Ignorance say's that more is always better. Once you change your zoning and ordinances you better be prepared for the the next entitie's lawyer saying you made an exception for meijers you set a precedent you can't restrict our size, hours, or type of business. Shopko is for sale, Kohl's struggles for lack of customer support, strip malls are 40% vacant. I've shopped at meijers in Ohio, dingy, dirty, prices higher than Walmart. If you don't like Shopko or P& S now you aren't going to go to meijer's.

I used to shop at Meijer in Indiana. They have nice stores. But it is NOT going to be different from what we already have close by, and it is going to be 2 to 3 times the size. I just don't see why a Taj Mahal of mid range merchandise is a good idea in our village.

I had never heard of this store until the talk of one going here. Now that I know what it is I think it is a great idea. I can't wait and sure hope we get one here! We need something to compete with Pick n Save so we get some good deals around here.

I personally love the Piggly Wiggly in Sussex because they are friendly and small. It takes half the time to shop because you don't have a ton of aisles to walk through and the new remodel has been a huge plus. Also, they never hesitate to support the local initiatives such as brat frys, car washes, donations to organizations such as the youth wrestling club, water ski club (Pewaukee), etc. You won't find that at other stores without going through a ton of red tape from corporate. I am also sad to hear of Shopko being for sale...if our store would have modeled the merchandise after other Shopko stores (like in River Falls, WI) with more variety and choices, it would be more popular. I would not doubt that if Meijer opens, the Pewaukee Walmart will become a 24/7 store as well. With our local banks getting robbed in Sussex, will a 24/7 store bring more crime? I don't know that answer and don't want to assume because I know crime is everywhere...but criminals are usually assuming us "country folk" are not as swift in crime fighting, even though we are. Just a thought.

I attended the Meijer project review last at the Boneyard. I was not impressed. Now I see a couple of comments above that say prices are not that great. We would have preferred a Sendiks (for quality, although they also have specials), or maybe a Woodman's. But I think P&S and the Pig give each other enough competition.
I left wondering why Sussex would add another grocery store when we have the convenience of Pick-n-Save and The Pig right in town. I could not help seeing that it will slow the flow of traffic in that area; especially during peak to/from-work flow times. I love driving through the rural landscaping of that area; Why clutter it up?

Since PNS is the only show in town you people don't realize how terrible their product has become and how expensive their prices are now! The Pig has a niche and isn't going anywhere IMO. Plus, again, there's the whole jobs thing, 250 approximately. Whats wrong with more jobs and more choices? Fortunately, Meijer coming to town looks inevitable.

I love Meijer. Bring it on. I am tired of nothing open 24 hours. Every other state I lived in many things are open 24 hours. Hate the way this area is and no one wants expansion.
