Reaction Rolls in on Walker Recall Win

Why the recall results ended up in Scott Walker's favor depended on which side of the aisle you stood on.

As the evening - and the recall efforts that have held the state's attention for nearly a year and a half - came to a close, various groups offered their opinions on why the results fell so heavily in Scott Walker's favor. And as usual, they fell along party lines.

State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told WisPolitics that despite his party's loss, they had no regrets over the recall effort, and chalked it up in part to funding of each campaign.

“They have millionaires and billionaires that can write checks and take out TV ads,” Tate said. “This should not have even been a contest considering how much they spent.

Rob Zerban, who is running against Republican Congressman Paul Ryan, was a bit more blunt.

“Today we saw the buying of an election by out-of-state interest groups, propping up a corrupt Governor who seeks to only do the bidding of the extreme right-wing," Zerban said in a release.

“While Governor Walker and his Tea Party band may have been successful today, the entire recall process brought together people from every corner of Wisconsin who truly love this state and were willing to stand in the cold of a Wisconsin winter to fight for their state. They were not defeated for lack of will or lack of purpose; Scott Walker won because his network of shady partners flooded our state with lies about the hard-working people of our state.

However, the conservative Americans for Prosperity issued their own statement, citing the policies of the Governor as key in garnering a victory.

“Scott Walker’s name was on the ballot tonight but it was his policies that were decided on. We started our efforts last year to educate the people of Wisconsin on what the budget reforms mean for them. We showed them what is possible when a state turns a $3.6 billion deficit into a $154.5 million surplus, when $1 billion is saved at the state and local levels and when property taxes are reduced for the first time in 12 years," stated Wisconsin State Director Luke Hilgemann.

An official release from the Walker campaign cited the taxpayer's interests as being on the ballot, giving the governor an unprecedented recall victory.

“This is such a tremendous victory for Wisconsin taxpayers,” said Ciara Matthews, Walker campaign communications director. “Today, Wisconsin voters have told the nation they stand with Governor Walker because he stands with them.”

The Wisconsin Obama-Biden campaign also weighed in with their own assessment of the results.

"While tonight’s outcome was not what we had hoped for – no one can dispute the strong message sent to Governor Walker.  Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites from all walks of life took a stand against the politics of division and against the flood of secret and corporate money spent on behalf of Scott Walker, which amounted to a massive spending gap of more than $31 million to $4 million," said Tripp Wellde, state director for the campaign.

"It is a testament to all of those individuals who talked to their friends, neighbors, and colleagues about the stakes in this election of how close this contest was.  The power of Wisconsin’s progressive, grassroots tradition was clearly on display throughout the run up to this election and we will continue to work together to ensure a brighter future for Wisconsin’s middle class."

It was a testiment to how playing dirty wins sometimes. The word "testiment" is often used by the GOP but "equitable" is not even in their dictionary.

We had an era like this when Joseph McCarthy was on top. He died a lonely alcoholic, though in the end. This GOP's time will come.

It always does.

Anyone notice when Barrett mentioned Walker's name the crowd started booing and Trolly Tom just stood there silently, yet when Walker mentioned Barrett and some in the crowd booed he insisted that they not boo him? Also notice in Mahlon MItchell's speach that he said "fight" about 6-8 times enciting the crowd? And they blame conservatives and tea partier's of starting the civil war. From the Obama campaign:

"While tonight’s outcome was not what we had hoped for – no one can dispute the strong message sent to Governor Walker. Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites from all walks of life took a stand against the politics of division and against the flood of secret and corporate money spent on behalf of Scott Walker, which amounted to a massive spending gap of more than $31 million to $4 million," said Tripp Wellde, state director for the campaign.

***************************

The message sent to Walker and the Republicans was "stay the course - you're on the right track". Whether the actual message is that or, "don't attempt to undo the results of the past election" is hard to quantify. I think it's the latter. Regardless hopefully the real message sent to all on both sides of the political divide is that utilizing our flimsy recall provision for political gain, in addition to being a wasteful use of time and resources, can have an effect exactly the opposite of that desired by those who attempt to use it in that fashion. Never again.

Bottom Line: Walker won the governors seat but the Dems secured the Senate now 17-16. Walkers agenda now is stalled. The GOP will spend millions to reclaim the majority. No more Fitzgerald as the majority speaker. Take a seat in back or Barca now. Now the Dems will introduce bills and have Walker veto, veto and veto showing his true colors.

A temporary and fruitless victory at best. The Senate is mostly in recess through the next election in November, and it is in November that we will retake a majority in the Senate in the new districts before the draft dodging Lehman is even able to cast a nay vote!

If the Dem Senators decide to flee the state again when they once again lose the majority, Lehman might try to take them to Canada instead of Illinois, as he's familiar with such a strategy and knows the area up there well.

James R Hoffa

So, let me see if I've got this straight.

Basically, Obama and Zerban believe that the majority of voters were bought off with corporate money, and in essence are calling the majority a bunch of idiots for voting as they did.

And that's going to help their campaigns in November how exactly?

What side is it that's being divisive again?

Is this for real?

I have no problem accepting the true majority decision, however unlike most Republicans I like to see everyone get a vote. The voter suppression tactics - passing a law prior to this election to make students live at the place they vote for 28 days prior to voting when the Republicans did the math and knew colleges let out less than 28 days ago - calling people from Republican Party hQ and telling voters election was Wed. or your vote is already registered if you signed a recall petition - or the attempt to implement voter ID that discriminates against the poor and others who would most likely vote Democratic - to re-districting simply to ensure Republican victories - all prove Republicans don't really believe they can win on their policies alone! "Some say" this is called Communism where only the "ruling class" gets a vote - just saying!

College students should vote only where they are domiciled, and not where they're temporarily residenced solely for the purposes of attending school. This just makes common sense.

Otherwise, we end up with the situation that we had during last year's recalls, wherein 65+ transient students from Minnesota voted in our elections via absentee ballot, while also casting ballots in their own home state of Minnesota. Is that right?

Correct I know there was no voter ID yesterday - I was pointing out this "tactic" used by Republicans. Can you show me a case of prosecuted voter fraud in Wisconsin that makes voter ID necessary? I am also aware re-districting happens by both parties but it is more often used by Republicans to manipulate elections. Can you comment on the recently passed "28 day rule"? Are you denying that voter suppression is a Republican tactic? I got the impression he could care less about anything or anybody else except his racial agenda. He was later interviewed and said that he loved his president, he loved obama, and he must be re-elected. I think this all ties in to his fight, fight, fight talk on stage. He did everything he could to "incite" the crowd. In my opinion, a very dangerous person. One who should never be in office of any kind. @Randy1949 -

We're enjoying our victory - let us have our fun!

That will take some time, as there are huge outstanding debt obligations that must be addressed first, such as he's already doing by taking care of our tab with Minnesota and repaying the illegally raided segregated funds. Once our debt is under control, state aid will return, and with a prosperous economy and the freedoms afforded to localities over their budgets via Act 10, there's no reason to think that property taxes shouldn't start to fall even more. But a majority of that is also contingent upon your local government's leadership and their decisions, so just keep that in mind and judge fairly.

Maybe after his full term, and you've given him a chance, your opinion will start to change about him. But it will take more than one term for a complete turn around, especially with the stall tactics that we've had to endure by the recall crowd since last February.

If everyone in the village is valued at the same rate it really does not matter if it is 75 or 100%. Actually 100% or as close as you can get to it is the most fair. The levy is the total amount collected by the municipality and the mil rate is set by the valuation. State aid was cut but Act 10 gave local control to more than make up for the cuts. If your blue ribbon schools saw cuts, it would be on your school board and the teachers union.

Nothing that Walker did, it's been law for a long time.
"Beginning in 1986, the Department of Revenue (DOR) requires that all property be assessed at or near 100% of the fair market value. The DOR requires that the assessed value of a taxation district must be established within 10% of the full value at least once during the four year period consisting of the current year and the three preceding years."

You have a problem with your municipality, not the state. Assessments are handled locally. Caledonia does theirs on a 5 year cycle and they should be doing them this year.
