Village Survey: What Should We Build at Madeline Park?

The Village of Sussex is looking for input from residents in its new survey regarding Madeline Park. What should they build there? What would make you visit? Take the survey and actively shape your community.

The Village of Sussex is hard at work again attempting to figure a way to make Madeline Park unique, this time turning toward Sussex residents to shed some light on the space.

The Parks and Recreation Department recently created a survey to gather more insight on what residents would like to see at Madeline Park, in addition to how often they use the parks system in general. The survey consists of just nine questions, and Parks and Rec Director Amy Flaherty says she hopes to get a lot of feedback.

“We need your help to determine what types of activities you enjoy in the Sussex parks, and what potential amenities you would like to see added to Madeline Park,” Flaherty wrote when distributing the survey.

The revitalization of the park is all a part of Sussex’s initiative to redevelop a specific park every two years. The plan was kicked off in 2011 with the reconstruction of RidgeviewPrides Crossing and Spring Green parks.

The village has an $80,000 budget associated with park redesigns, and while Flaherty has been exploring numerous options for Madeline Park, none of them seem to stick. From creating a rest station for the nearby Bugline trail to installing adult, outdoor exercise equipment, nothing has caught the Park Board’s eye.

The Parks and Recreation Department’s survey consists of questions like:

  • What is the distance from your home to Madeline Park?
  • What amenities do you utilize in the Village of Sussex parks you visit?
  • What amenity or amenities would you like to see added to Madeline Park?

The survey will close on May 10 so Flaherty has time to compile and examine the results for the Parks and Rec board meeting on May 21. So take the survey and share what you voted for here in the comments. What amenities would you like to see at Madeline?

How about none? Why does the board feel the need to spend more money, especially in a time when people don't have a lot of it?

@Joseph, You know how it works, first they over tax us then they have to find a way to spend the money!

My thoughts on this is why update the parks when they barely keep the ones they have in good shape. The diamonds around the village are in some of the worst conditions and they really are not caring for the parks. Use the money to keep the existing parks in good condition. Just another reason why the person in charge of the rec department should be from the village and not an outsider as she does not have to help pay with her taxes.

First three roundabouts within 2 blocks on Main St. and now renovating a park nobody knows exists. Who are the knuckleheads on the Sussex board?

Maybe some skateboard ramps or basketball courts. Oh, wait, that would actually draw people and make too much noise. Hmmm.... How about some of the local nurseries plan out a three season botanical garden. People could walk through or just enjoy the afternoon there.
