With the Aug. 14 primaries less than three weeks away, Wisconsin GOP candidate for U.S. Senate and former Gov. Tommy Thompson announced an economic plan that his campaign says will ease regulations on businesses.
During a Madison press conference Monday, Thompson described the economy as "hamstrung by debt and regulation," and he described his five-point plan — called "Restore America" — that includes repealing the Affordable Care Act, following Rep. Paul Ryan's proposed budget and enacting tax reform.

"We're all here today because we share a common concern and a common belief, our concern is that our nation is on the brink with a stagnant economy and unsustainable debt load, we're on a path we simply cannot continue," Thompson was quoted in a press release. "Yet our belief is that the brightest days for America can still be ahead of us if we have the courage to enact the right solutions."
Here's a breakdown of the proposed plan:
- Repealing the Affordable Care Act
- "Cap revenues and spending"
- Tax reform, including a 25 percent corporate rate, a flat tax option for individuals and a lower capital gains tax
- Energy independence
- Passing a budget in the Senate
"We have a choice to make in just under three weeks, and another one in November. I have both the plan for tomorrow and the experience putting our state back to work to get our country back on track," Thompson's statement read. "We need to get our economy moving, which starts with growing business and not government — lower taxes and less regulation."
Thompson will face Eric Hovde, Mark Neumann and Jeff Fitzgerald in the Aug. 14 primary, and the winner will take on Democratic candidate Tammy Baldwin.
The most recent polling data in the race shows Thompson neck-and-neck with businessman Eric Hovde.

He seems like just another status quo establishment politician. Following Paul Ryan's budget plan? It doesn't balance the budget for nearly 30 years! There are plans out there that balance in 5 years, those make more sense to me.

The Rand Paul/Mike Lee/Jim DeMint budget balances the federal budget in 5 years.
The Gary Johnson budget would balance the federal budget in 2 years or less.
I concur - these budgets are better than Ryan's, however, support for them isn't that strong, unfortunately.

Reducing the deficit is less important than creating jobs right now. It's darkly amusing to hear the GOP'rs who rubber stamped spending to new heights under GWB complain about deficits. You caused it! But why should you worry. You won't be going bankrupt because of medical bills or crippling student loans anytime soon. You get a fat tax-payer funded paycheck and a Cadillac medical/dental plan.
The Tea/GOPrs like Ron "Our Last Shred of Freedom" Johnson (aka Mr. Jane Curler/BEMIS) don't even know what's going on, just babble ALEC-fueled talking points.
But Tommy should know better. Even though he pouted over getting HHS instead of Transportation, he did learn a bit about the impact of hunger and disease on people. Why would he support the Ryan budget plan? Because he wants to be elected.
However, it was Thompson was the governor who lifted the interest rate cap on credit cards in Wisconsin? Our state was one of the few that had a rate cap (18.5%). He was also the guy who was going to tear up Vernon County along the Kickapoo River with a crony road contract (turning a two-lane highway that residents reported one could drive without seeing another car for 20 minutes at a time into a desolate 4-lane highway).

@Bren -
Why do you liberals always use the G W Bush years as a baseline for everything? In case you haven't noticed, it's a whole new Republican Party thanks to the Tea Party! The Tea Party is pulling the GOP back to a federally limited government and financial conservatism platform.
You complain about job creation, but fail to acknowledge that it was Bill Clinton (D) who practically killed American industrialism and manufacturing.
Please cite your sources showing that Johnson "just babble ALEC-fueled talking points."
Why should the government set a rate cap on credit cards? Shouldn't lenders be able to set their own rates? Wouldn't competition keep rates reasonable? And if you don't like the rates, don't us a credit card - no one is forcing you to do so, are they? A credit card is not legal tender.
So now every road project tear's up the County in which it's located? But you're right in that Tommy is a big spending Republican.
Finally, you're voting for Baldwin!

Mr. Hoffa, I appreciate that you don't take time to gain in-depth understanding of issues, but the reason that the recession has a George W. Bush "baseline" is because the recession began during his administration. His policies exacerbated and exploded a looming problem. You've been informed of this before.
As with the other issues, I'm not wasting time on your requests since you won't read them through anyway. You probably aren't even reading this part now! I could write anything and you'll respond with a two-post commentary with a name-call or accusation at the bottom. ; )

Tammy is helping the folks in WI while the Teabaggers air their dirty minds.
...Baldwin's latest television commercial focuses on her work in Congress to get the U.S. Coast Guard to "buy American."
In the ad, Baldwin explains that, while Coast Guard cutters are "built in America," they are "powered by engines manufactured overseas."
Baldwin wants to change this circumstance. That's why she has sponsored "buy American" legislation that would require the Coast Guard to buy engines from American companies.
Since Wisconsin is a boat-building and engine-making state, Baldwin is not just taking the right stand for America. She is taking the right stand for Wisconsin workers.
"While the Coast Guard protects our shores, we can also protect our jobs," explains the congresswoman.
That's a winning message for the Democrat.
So, while the Republicans are spouting the usual free-trade nonsense and making the case for why electing any of them as senator would be a bad idea, Baldwin is making a case for herself that appeals across lines of partisanship and ideology.
That's a big part of why she is pulling ahead.
