Sussex Officials Work Through Voter ID Uncertainty

With two judges now striking down the controversial voter ID law, Sussex poll workers will explain to voters in April election they no longer need an ID to vote.

With the fate of the state’s , local elections officials said they will just have to explain to voters in the April general election they will not need to see an ID just yet.

“Well we had a February election and it went pretty smooth,” Sussex Clerk Sue Freiheit said. “You know, if people bring their ID’s and we don’t need it, we’ll just explain that we don’t need it at this time, but that’s the only thing we can do.”

The state’s highly controversial , which forces voters to show a photo ID at polling places in order to vote, was recently halted from being enforced for the spring election by a .

On Tuesday a second judge also ruled against the law and keeps it from being enacted, barring appeal by the state.

Although local clerks have worked to educate their communities about the new law, it will not be in place for the April election. The law was in effect for the February elections and Freiheit said it went smoothly.

Freiheit said voters will still need to sign the poll book when voting, but they will not have to show ID.

Three Village Board trustee positions are up for election, however, none of the candidates are being challenged in the April. One race for judge for Lake Country Municipal Court will be contested with attorney Timothy Kay facing off against attorney and Waukesha County Board Supervisor Peter Wolff for an open seat on the bench.

If the ID issue isn’t resolved by summer, Sussex will only be affected if the effort to recall Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch is placed on a ballot as none of the recalled state senators are from the area.
