State Democrats Want GOP 'Protest' Candidates Off Recall Ballot
In an unsurprising move, Jeremy Levinson, attorney for the state Democratic Party, has filed a formal complaint with the state Government Accountability Board over the GOP's "protest" candidates.
Well, it's officially a complaint now.
The Associated Press is reporting that Jeremy Levinson, attorney for the Democratic Party of Wisconin, has filed a formal complaint with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board over the state GOP running "protest" candidates in the upcoming recall elections.
Levinson wants the six candidates — four in the state Senate recalls as well as governor and lieutenant governor contests — removed from the ballot because he claims they're committing election fraud for claiming they're Democrats when they really aren't.
The "protest" candidates include:
- Gladys Huber (D) running in the gubernatorial recall race;
- Isaac Weix running as a Democrat against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch;
- Tamra Varebrook challenging State Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) as a Democrat;
- Gary Ellerman (D) challenging Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau);
- James Engel (D) running against Republican Terry Moulton in Senate District 23;
- and Jim Buckley (D) challenging Sen. Pam Galloway (R-Wausau).
Levinson says the "protest" candidates are just a way for the Republicans to manipulate the elections. Republicans say they're running the "fake Democrats" to keep Democrats from dictating the scheduling of elections.
But Levinson's argument also includes charges of disenfranchisement.
"Since people can sign only one candidate's nomination paper per office, anyone who signed a fake Democrat's papers lost an opportunity to nominate a legitimate Democrat," he is quoted as saying.
Ben Sparks, spokesman for the Republican Party of Wisconsin, said the GAB was well aware of what the GOP was doing and still allowed the six "protest" candidates on the ballot.
As for what the GAB will do, Reid Magney, spokesman for the agency, said any challenges will be taken up at Tuesday's board meeting.

I hate to say this, because I appreciate clean elections, but... Why do Democrats claim it is illegal when Republicans do it, but condone it when Democrats do it? It is a tried and true Democrat tactic. It's also NOT illegal in Wisconsin. I guess they don't consider turnabout fair play.

If you could trust Democrats to keep to the May primary and the June general election, these protests candidates would NOT be necessary.
If they would pull out all but one in one particular race, the general would be moved to May.
You can't trust those Democrats as far as you can throw them. And don't try and tell me they wouldn't use the tactic if the tables were turned. For those of you that say this is unethical, then you don't know anything about political strategy.

Keith, the Dems didn't use that tactic last summer and not now. If a fake Republican is on the Democratic Gubnatorial ticket, it is solely the action by that candidate and not sanctioned by the DPW. It will be up to the GAB to decide if false statements were made on the nomination papers.

Here's the form one uses to declare as a candidate.

Since Wisconsin doesn't require party affiliations, anyone is free to declare themselves a candidate for any party they want to represent.

Considering that Wisconsin doesn't have party affiliations when one registers to vote, and we have an open primary system where voters can decide for themselves which party's primary to vote in, how exactly should it be determined if a person is allowed run as a Democrat or not?

Perfectly legal to run for whatever position and whatever party you want. That is a RIGHT, unlike collective bargaining which is a privilege!!

Tom, Sheriff Clark runs as a Democrat for the convenience being elected in a Democratic County. it is different from the fake Democrats trying to provide additional time for the GOP Senators being recalled. Clark is a freeloader who refuses to join the Democratic Party after being kindly asked to do so in recent years.

Is there some sort of test or exam that candidates have to take in order for them to run with a specific political party affiliation?
If I support gay marriage, do I have to run as a democrat? If I support Walker's collective bargaining policy, do I have to run as a republican? What if I support both? Is Ron Paul violating the law because he's declared as a republican even though he's really a Libertarian? Should someone arrest Sheriff Clarke for running as a Democrat?

What is really amazing is how many Liberals still think the "high speed rail" to Madison was a good idea.
Just spend $800 million to go 80 miles.
More stops than the Hiawatha.
Millions of dollars of unfunded maintenance costs per year.
Only about 20 miles where the "high speed" of 70 miles per hour could be reached.
No studies to show how many people would ride the silly thing.
As opposed to $150 million to an existing line that carries hundreds of passengers a day through a grid locked city.
That decision was a no brainer.

Mark is not whining, he is stating facts. Walker and the Fitz boys are the most unethical politicians that Wisconsin has seen in modern times. Every time a progressive states facts, you right wingers accuse he or she of whining. That is because you are paranoid about anything that is favorable to the electorate. Many of you are are victims of the electronic mind pollution that comes from Sykes and Belling. Do you realize that you may be part of the 24 percent that vote against their own interest. Over 150,000 private sector jobs lost under Jim Doyle versus 18,000 gained under Scot Walker. No, not on track yet for 250,000 in four years, but at least the runaway freight train has been stopped. (here's the answer to your response:

Castle doctrine in now in effect.

Anti-Alinsky, the Rovian projection theme has been identified. Your numbers are parced. Scott Walker (R-ALEC) won office with 52% of the vote, hardly a mandate. How many public employees who had their salaries cut by 9% are Republicans or right-leaning independents? How many might be women who are offended by the new abortion and sex ed legislation? How many are upset by the castle doctrine and the recent death of unarmed Bo Morrison?
I wouldn't categorically state that the electorate has had enough of Scott Walker, Republicans (and ALEC). But I hope enough are smart enough to be able to part the gaseous clouds of right-wing rhetoric, sore loser fake Democratic candidates, bad sex ed legislation, etc., to realize the truth and vote this man out of office in June.
The Anti-Alinsky

No Bren, hardly a mandate, but enough of one to move forward. In the most negative campaign I remember, Diamond Jim Doyle beat Scott McCallum 45% to 41%. And yet Diamond Jim moved forward with his agenda as best he could. Four years later Diamond Jim beat Mark Green 52% to 45%. Again, hardly a mandate, but he managed to advance the Democratic agenda by using the Frankenstein veto to write the budget bill his way.
Yet two years later when Democrats controlled the Assembly, the Senate and the Governor's office, Diamond Jim led the charge to empower public unions further, overload BadgerCare and raise EVERY tax on the books, including the chicken tax.
And the Democrats fell in line with everything with most of the discussions occurring behind closed doors.

Conservatives Are Just Lazy Thinkers (New Research Suggests)
This is fascinating: New research suggests that, “when under time pressure or otherwise cognitively impaired, people are more likely to express conservative views.” The study, published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, tested responses from participants as their thinking was challenged, first by alcohol, then by multi-tasking distractions, time constraints, and finally by instructions to basically not even think at all. The results from all four experiments showed that the less thinking involved, the more conservative the participants’ expressed views would be. So: upshots and implications? For one thing, while it may not be surprising, it is important to note that conservative thinking (an emphasis on personal responsibility, acceptance of hierarchy, and a preference for the status quo) seems to be our ’default’ setting.

Yes, There Were Flags
I'll leave it to others to decide exactly where to draw the exact dividing line is betweeneveryday rightwing craziness and out-and-out fascism, but it never hurts to be reminded of this admonition by Sinclair's Lewis. There certainly were plenty of flags. And no shortage of speakers spewing the usual over the top rightwing vitriol, often attacking their political opponents' personal hygiene and grooming -- a common rightwing means of dehumanizing those with who they disagree that seems to say more about the speakers than those with whom they disagree...

I really didn't think I had to explain sarcasm to Robert or Bren. It was intended to show the ridiculousness of Robert's statement that "The Castle Doctrine is designed to keep Democrats from doing door to door canvassing in an election year."
As I explained to Bren once before, I am not a birther, but find the stupidity on both sides funny as hell. Yes, there is that part of me that would love this to be true for a number of reasons. But the one fact that no-one has refuted is that his mother was an American citizen, making Obama an natural born American no matter where he was born.
I will be more careful in the future when using sarcasm on the unwitting.
