Special Olympics athletes from throughout southern Wisconsin took part in a friendly but spirited bowling competition Saturday at the AMF Bowlero Lanes in Wauwatosa.

The event was part of the organization's Southern Fall Sports Tournament that drew more than 550 athletes, nearly 200 coaches and 300 volunteers. Athletes also competed in a volleyball tournament at the Center Court Complex in Waukesha.

Organizers say the fall tournament is just one example of how athletes further Special Olympics' mission to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families and others.

Congratulations to all the Special Olympics athletes and thank you to all of the volunteers and the Milwaukee Police Officers who took part in the bowling competition! One of the best experiences of my life was when I worked with handicapped children. Helping out at Special Olympics was always one of my favorite days, so thank you for posting all the photos!
