Do you want to be scared? Terrified? Take a walk on the ghostly side?

October is when the spooks come out, from scream-filled haunted houses to walks through areas ghosts are said to visit. Check out our list of some of the area's best, and let us know if you have any other favorites. 

Ozaukee County

Port Washington Ghost Walk, Downtown Port Washington. Tours of the downtown area take people through some of the spooky spots in Port Washington. Groups of 25 are welcomed on the two-hour walks, which step off seven times on Oct. 26 and 27, and six on Oct. 28.

The Haunt, at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds south of Highway 60 on Washington Avenue in Cedarburg. The Haunt is run by volunteers in the Ozaukee County 4-H program, and 100 percent of the proceeds support the 4-H program. 

Milwaukee County

Spooky Stalks Haunted Cornfield at 12000 W. Appleton Ave., Milwaukee. This haunted cornfield walk started in 2005, and winds visitors through a corn maze filled with scare after scare.

Mars Haunted House 734 W. Historic Mitchell St., Milwaukee. The haunted house takes place in the second story of a former commercial building that was built in the 1800s.

The Hill Has Eyes at 7900 Crystal Ridge Road, Franklin. The attraction includes two haunted trails and a ride on the old ski chair lift; a beer tent as well as regular bon fires and music are also at this location.

Hauntfest held at the Wisconsin State Fair Park, 1200 S. 84th Street, enter at Gate 4. This event offers 20,000 square feet of scares with a "Last Ride" attraction that begs the question: What would it be like to be buried alive?

Waukesha County

Wisconsin Feargrounds, at the Waukesha Expo Center, 1000 Northview Road, Waukesha. One of the nation's best, this haunted experience takes place at the Waukesha County Fairgrounds. Check out Waukesha Patch's story about Wisconsin Feargrounds in 2011. 

Haunted High at the former Oconomowoc Middle School, 550 East Forest Street in Oconomowoc. This is the last year for the event, which winds visitors through the 90-year-old deserted school.

Minooka Mash at Minooka Park, 1927 E. Sunset Dr., Waukesha. This event is called "unhaunted" and caters to family with younger children. It includes a barn dance, campfire stories, a walk through the woods to meet woodland critters and other activities.

Racine County

Abandoned Haunted House Complex, on the frontage road east of I-94, north of Highway 11 and south of Highway 20. There's everything from a cemetery to hospital, clowns and a spinning vortex at this haunted house. Check out photos of the Abandoned Haunted House Complex from Patch's behind-the-scenes tour.

Factory of Fear Haunted House, 615 S. Marquette St., Racine. Created each year in an old warehouse outside Downtown Racine, the Factory of Fear is one of the most terrifying haunted houses in the area. 

Kenosha County

Kemper Center Haunted House and Ghost Tours, 6501 3rd Ave., Kenosha. Started in 2010, patrons tour the Kemper Center, originally the private home of U.S. Sen. Charles Durkee and in 1865 a boarding school for young women. A professional theatrical event explores the legend of the haunting of Kemper by the spirit of a nun.
