POLL: What Are You Watching from the London Olympics?
Milwaukee was the No. 1-rated market for Sunday's Olympic broadcasts, despite the lack of local athletes and the tape-delayed prime-time events.
Only five Wisconsin athletes are participating in the London Olympics — and only one, Waukesha triathlete Gwen Jorgensen, is from the Milwaukee region — but that hasn’t dampened the interest among local TV viewers.
ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) Tweeted on Monday: “Day 2 Olympics shocker. NBC’s #1 TV market yesterday was Milwaukee.” Duane Dudek of JSOnline reported that WTMJ-TV, the local NBC affiliate, had a 28.4 rating for Sunday’s prime-time Olympics coverage — which is almost exclusively tape-delayed. (By comparison, the top Nielsen-rated show nationwide for the week of July 16 was America’s Got Talent, with a rating of 6.1.)

I have the Olympics app on my iPhone; have watched fencing, archery, and equestrian (dressage). On tv it's been gymnastics (a relative went to Swiss Turners along with the Hamm brothers and Chelsea Memmel(?). Although there's a new crop of talented gymnasts at the London Olympics, it's still amazing to watch. Kayaking, volleyball, diving, and swimming are also huge favorites.

As the author of this poll, I should say that I realize track and field hasn't started yet but it's a marquee event and will fill prime time all next week. Personally, I haven't got time to watch a lot but enjoy seeing the off-beat events when they can be contained time-wise (don't need a full-length road cycling race live, thanks.) I enjoy volleyball and soccer; gymnastics does little for me but track is OK.

Hoffa just likes the spirit of the games and the multitude of events offered. There's no particular favorite.
I loved it last night when the coach from the Japanese gymnastics team was challenging the final pommel horse score and was waiving around a US hundred dollar bill! Classic!
One thing Hoffa doesn't like is NBC! CBS used to cover the games much better than NBC. Although thankfully, NBC's coverage isn't as bad as ABC's coverage of the LA games - what a disaster that was!

International rules dictate that an appeal fee must be paid in order to file a protest. Japanese officials quickly rounded up a number of large bills and sent a coach, armed with cash and the proper forms, to appeal. Strange but true...

Yeah, I caught that part. And because the challenge was successful, they got their money refunded. It was still funny as hell watching him run around the arena floor with a US hundred dollar bill clearly visible :-) Even the NBC commentators remarked that "it doesn't look very good."
Interesting that the Japanese had US currency. One would think that in Great Britain, they'd be using the Pound Sterling or Euro. Or at the very least you'd expect the Japanese to have Yens. But it was none of the above - it was a US $100 bill.

I love the equestrian events, but our house is all Olympics all the time for both the summer and the winter games. We are glued to just about every event. I have to admit that water polo confuses me, and I wish we could see more of the martial arts. An American woman just took a bronze after beating a former gold medalist in her weight class in judo and we only got to see a few seconds of the final take down.
Like @Hoffa, we most enjoy the spirit of the games and cheer for everyone to do well no matter who's playing whom at the time. Of course we cheer Team USA the most, but we just hate seeing these gifted athletes stumble when they've worked so hard to get there.

We don't have cable or dish, so we can only watch what's on channel 4.1. We've been leaving it on all day and it's a lot of fun for the boys to see sports we don't normally get to watch. It also helps to learn some about different countries.
