Plan Commission Will Review Meijer Proposal
After a marathon public hearing, the Plan Commission will review the initial draft of the Meijer conditional use permit later this month.
The Sussex Plan Commission will review the conditional use permit for the Meijer development at its meeting Jan. 17.
Village staff was directed to craft the permit after an unprecedented marathon of a public hearing. After seven hours, separated by two separate meetings Nov. 28 and Dec. 20, 35 evidentiary exhibits, and testimony from residents, attorneys, and experts, the Plan Commission moved forward to the next step.
Meijer is planning a 191,000-square-foot, 24-hour grocery and retail store on the corner of Highway 164 and County Highway K. Meijer is also considering a similar sized project in Oak Creek.
According to the Sussex Sun, the draft of the proposal contains several exceptions to the village code.
The Plan Commission will review the initial proposal on Jan. 17, and could vote to approve the permit in February.

We moved to the Town of Lisbon three years ago, thinking we were getting away from the all the so called progress in Brookfield. In the three years we have been here, we helped to fight the joining of Sussex, and Lisbon. There are all these large homes being built around the area, and now, we have to put up with the Meijer Store project being less than a mile from us. We came out here to enjoy the beautiful rural atmosphere. Now, with this huge shpping area going up we will have to put up with their lights being on at night, instead of being able to see the stars. Traffic will increase. Soon, there will be bus service coming out here. We thought we were finished with money grabbing developers. It seems that all Sussex officials can think about is the tax money coming in. Not what the people of this area want. One thing is for sure, you are going to reap what you sou. Don't we have enough trouble with robberies, and the like? Why can't the Meijer Company build in the area closer to Capitol Drive? There are less homes there. You better figure more police officers in your budget. You certainly are going to need them!!!

I agree Lois. This monster is not needed! I too hate the whole project plan. It's reinforced our decision to move from the quaint village of Sussex we've loved for so long. :(

Thank for your letting me know you agree with me. Aren't there more people out here who do not want this? Why are they staying quiet? We lived in Sussex when we were first married. That was more than thirty-five years ago. It was such a lovely place, so we decided to move back here. We refuse to move from this area. We helped fight the merger between Sussex, and the Town of Lisbon. Can't we fight this some how? There is power in numbers. People, where are those who agree with us?
