Sprawled Out- This is a ‘a la prima’ or a ‘in the moment’ piece where we had to finish a work in one class period. We were to draw feet using a contour style, where you draw the object without looking at the paper. Coni Dowden

Sprawled Out- This is a ‘a la prima’ or a ‘in the moment’ piece where we had to finish a work in one class period. We were to draw feet using a contour style, where you draw the object without looking at the paper.
A Classroom Friend- Part The Boy is in an empty classroom, looking out a ‘window’ to a fantasy world in order to talk to his friend. I wanted to show the Boy’s loneliness and isolation in this piece- it seems that his imaginary friend is the only creature he can talk to.
A Failed Shipment- Only requirement of the assignment was to use boxes as a subject. I added elements of fantasy to show a more lively/interesting scene- the dragons are hatching and breaking out of their packaging.
An Elegant Dress- Part of a large still life assignment focusing on drapery and folds in clothing. I wanted to depict the weight and sophistication of the dress through this work.
As We Walk These Darkened Halls- In this one, the Dragon is entering through a portal and becoming an actual part of reality- at least, in the Boy’s eyes.
Automat(Black and White)- Part of four works where we took a famous work and emphasized different parts of the piece. I used Edward Hopper’s Automat and emphasized the contrasting values through black and white charcoal and pastel.

I am Coni Dowden, a junior currently attending Hamilton High School, and I was named December's art student of the month.

I am currently enrolled in AP Studio Art, and I'm working on a portfolio for a College Board exam this spring.

Art has been a part of my life since before I can remember, and I can’t imagine myself without it. As a child, I remember my mother having an entire wall dedicated to my crayon drawings. Every drawing I ever did was hung there, from family portraits to school projects to designs of fantastic and fairytale-like creatures.

That wall followed me throughout my childhood, reminding me of my constant improvement and development as an artist.

Art is an endless journey to me, one that I am looking forward to!

There are always ways to improve and mature at your talents. Because art is a constant process to me and not just a passing hobby, the path I take after high school will no doubt involve art in some way.

I have grown far too attached to this form of expression to do anything otherwise. My objective is to pursue a career involving animation or illustration after college.

Descriptions of my Artwork:

Concentrations: A part of my portfolio involves a series of paintings that relate to and solve a solution I make up. For my concentration, I am telling the story of the main character (the boy) and his imaginary friend, the dragon. My concentration involves  two different ‘realms’ that the two reside in - fantasy and reality - separated by a window or portal.

Breadths: Assignments that our instructor assigns us, usually in class.
