New Marquette Poll Puts Baldwin and Obama Out Front

Shifts among Independents has support swinging more Democratic than Republican.

The race for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat has taken a dramatic turn as Democrat Tammy Baldwin has opened up a 9 percentage point lead over Republican Tommy Thompson, according to a Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday.

Baldwin, a congresswoman from Madison, is leading the former governor by 50 percent to 41 percent among likely voters. In an August Marquette poll, Thompson led Baldwin 50 percent to 41 percent.

President Barack Obama also widened his lead from a month ago. Obama leads Republican challenger Mitt Romney 54 percent to 40 percent, the largest margin so far in the Marquette polls. In August, Obama led 49 percent to 46 percent.

Professor Charles Franklin, director of the poll, said the biggest shift in the Senate race was among independents.

"Baldwin has picked up a little bit with Democrats, but independents have reversed," Franklin noted. "It's a 50-38 advantage for Baldwin."

A Public Policy Polling poll released Tuesday shows Baldwin leading Thompson by 3 percentage points while a CBS-New York Times poll released Wednesday gives each candidate 47 percent of the vote.

As is the case in the Senate race, independents were the key factor in Obama picking up more support in the latest Marquette poll. In August, 45 percent of independents said they backed the president; in Wednesday's poll, it was 53 percent.

The school's August poll showed that despite tapping Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, Romney didn't get as big a bump as was expected. Still, results last month showed a tightening race with only about 3 points separating the candidates, making the race a virtual dead heat.

Poll results released this week from other outlets like Public Policy Polling and joint ventures from NBC and the Wall Street Journal and CBS and the New York Times show Obama with a narrow lead over Romney in Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, a Rasmussen Reports poll of 11 swing states — including Wisconsin — shows Romney with a 1-point lead over the president, 47 to 46 percent. In 2008, Rasmussen notes, Obama won these states with a combined margin of 53 to 46 percent.

Public Policy Polling, Franklin said, is conducting a new poll and he expects those results sometime next week.

The Marquette poll was conducted from Sept. 13 to 16. The results on the Senate and presidential races are from the responses of 601 likely voters and  4.1 percent margin of error.

Baldwin pleased, Thompson dismisses results

After the results of the Marquette poll were released, John Kraus from the Baldwin campaign issued a statement pointing to how working across party lines has clearly helped her move up in the polls:

Four polls released this week show that we are moving in the right direction as the choice for Wisconsin voters has been made clear. Tammy Baldwin has a strong record of fighting for Wisconsin middle class families and small businesses, and she isn’t afraid to take on the big moneyed special interests that have too much power and influence in Washington.  Tommy Thompson has cashed in on his Washington connections with these same Washington special interests and he will continue working for them, not Wisconsin’s middle class.  And unlike Thompson who has vowed to play the same ‘no compromise’ politics that has stood in the way of progress, Tammy will work across party lines to move our economic recovery forward.

Thompson dismissed the MU results based on an oversampling of Democrats:

The Marquette poll clearly oversamples Democrats, giving them a partisan advantage. We do not believe that today's Marquette poll reflects the opinions of Wisconsin voters. They have already attempted to adjust this flawed poll once today, indicating problems in their methodology. We have no doubt that Wisconsin families will see through the lies and demagoguery that Tammy Baldwin and her liberal cronies are using to divert voters' attention away from her failed record. No distortion of the truth or amount of money can cover up the fact that Madison liberal Tammy Baldwin is too extreme for Wisconsin.

The response from Republicans pointed out that Wisconsin is a swing state very much in play. Nicole Tieman, Wisconsin Communications Director for the Republican National Committee, released this statement:

Wisconsin is a crucial swing state that the Obama Campaign is clearly worried about losing. The President turned his back on his most loyal supporters during the recall election, has been absent from the state for over 200 days, and has implemented policies that have made Wisconsinites worse off. Now, after seeing the growing Republican momentum and enthusiastic support for Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan’s plan to strengthen Wisconsin’s small business and middle class families, the President is scrabbling to regain the support he’s lost since the 2008 election.  President Obama’s upcoming visit to Milwaukee, paired with ad buys to be released next week show a President desperate to hang on to a state his campaign once thought was safely in their camp. In November, Wisconsin voters will choose a new direction and prove them wrong.

9% lead? I'm thinking this is Marquette students polling Marquette students. Probably should broaden the poll beyond the cafeteria building. Just the same, a couple million folks will still be voting for Thompson and Romney.

Great point GearHead. Those who are on assistance are available at any time to answer a poll. Those who work are not able to take those calls during normal business hours. So it would seem typical to get more lefties answering polls, while the working people are working 2 jobs and are not home.
Sadly if the lefties who are feeding off the Government teet actually show up at the polls to vote- we will be stuck with more of the same big government assistance programs. Thus requiring real workers to work 3 jobs to make ends meet, while the scum gets rewarded by the left.

We need to restore balance to our state legislature. As I write so often, one-party rule/dictatorship is undemocratic. Even though the votes may have gone this way we are best when all voices are heard. The divisiveness in our legislature and state occurred because the minority voices were ignored/disrespected. Compromise. Balance. Discourse. Perhaps not everyone leaves the table completely satisfied but all leave with an understanding and appreciation of issues and a work plan.

I on the other hand do jump ship on certain drug laws and prison sentences for drug dealers but that is mostly because I don't want to pay to lock them up because of the financial and social cost to our society. I don't agree with anything Obama stands for what it comes to the economy, but that's probably because I am successful in business and realize he has never had to run a business or anything that matter outside of govt. He is a fool when it comes to economics and the only people who don't realize that are either looking for a handout or living off the DailyKooks.

I don't agree with your views about Obama's handling of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, partly because I've studied the economic tides over the past decades and partly because I also monitor Japan's post-earthquake/economic crisis activity.

I don't see how our penal system is going to change while privatization of prisons and bright-star thinking like "three strikes" continues. That's something voters need to work on.

oak creek, I was describing the majority of people, not Tammy Baldwin. She's a liberal. I'll vote for her because I don't care for Tommy's "consulting" in Washington. @Taoist -

BTW - That's not what Romney said at all.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn't connect. And he'll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that's what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 percent in the center that are independents that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not, what it looks like."

Comment_arrow

James R Hoffa

6:11 pm on Wednesday, September 19, 2012

All of this is fact. Currently 47% of household are receiving some form of government assistance outside SS, Medicare, and VA benefits - that includes SSI, SSDI, food stamps, welfare, special tax credits for being poor (some of which are fully refundable), child support services, etc. Romney wants to reduce that because 1) it's financially unsustainable, and 2) it's not fair to those who are working and paying for that assistance when a large majority of those people are fully capable to taking care of themselves!

If those people want to continue to receive their assistance, then they'll probably be voting for Obama and not Romney. That doesn't mean that Romney doesn't care about these people - he'd rather see them supporting themselves by working and earning their own keep. And that's why he wants to improve the economy - so there are jobs for more people to work at.

And 47% pay no income taxes, so his message of lowering income taxes doesn't work at convincing those people to vote for him, does it?

So obviously, Romney is going to focus his campaign at targeting those people in the middle, just as he said in response to the question about his CAMPAIGN.

You and the liberal media idiots are acting like Romney's statement is in regards to his policy positions, which they clearly are not.

Do you honestly believe that the Obama campaign doesn't have strategy sessions about which demographic of voters they want to target in their campaign?

Remember the recent Obama for african americans push by his campaign? Those ads specifically targeted black people and ignored white people, hispanics, asians, etc. So where was the media howling about how Obama is racist and ignoring the white electorate with his campaign? Instead, the MSDNC idiots were all raving about how wonderful the President's campaign was for reaching out to the black community! The BIAS is so blaring obvious!!!

If the only way that liberals can win is by spinning the truth and lying to people, well, that's not saying a whole lot about your side, is it?

We saw a lot of Obama lies already - closing Gitmo, halfing the deficit, shovel ready jobs, unemployment below 8%, ending both wars on day 1, no mandate in his health care plan, no new taxes on the middle class, etc.

Why don't you guys ever hold Obama accountable for his LIES??? Hoffa just doesn't get the liberal mentality!

Where is your proof of the exact campaign promises that you refer to. For 1, my recollection was that he intended to end the war in Iraq in 16 months. No president can end decade long wars in 1 day. get real. Intelligent people know once a President is in power there are many factors involved in what is actually accomplished. Once again you place the label of a lie on possibly unfulfilled campaign promises. By being mistaken with your quotes, does that make you a liar? I won't sink to your level and call you that

Comment_arrow

James R Hoffa

9:29 pm on Wednesday, September 19, 2012

@John Feia -

1) Hoffa has previously provided links supporting each of the asserted Obama promises enumerated above.

2) The Democrats, media, and left wing are constantly howling about Walker's campaign promises, and yet, Hoffa has not seen a single comment from you defending Walker the way in which you're now defending Obama, despite the situations being identical in nature.

3) Closing Gitmo is well within Obama's sole discretion as commander in chief of the armed services. And yet, Gitmo is still open, is it not? He's had almost four years to close it, has taken no affirmative steps to do so, and yet you still consider that to be merely an unfulfilled campaign promise? COME ON!!! It was a LIE.

4) As to ending the wars on day 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VlXfs1K04g. First thing that he will do is bring home the troops, you can take that to the bank. But that's not what happened. He did Obamacare, stimulus, auto bailouts, and a whole slew of other things before he ended Iraq. And we're still waiting for Afghanistan to end. If Hoffa would have placed a bet in Vegas based on Obama's promise, he would have lost all his money. Again, as commander in chief, if Obama really wanted to end the wars on day 1, he could have issued the order on day 1 and no one could have done anything to stop it. But he didn't, did he? Yeah, that was definitely a LIE!

5) The same can be said of every other promise he has made and broken.

For me, it's the banality of the way it appears that is so unbelievably repellent and offensive--typed up all nice and normal, just another mode of conception. Senate Republican leaders fled their weekly press conference after delivering prepared remarks Wednesday without taking a single question from reporters, who were eagerly seeking their thoughts on their presidential nominee’s newly unearthed remarks dismissing nearly half of American voters.

Although some of the leadership members addressed journalists in separate huddles as they walked away, the unusual display is symptomatic of the party’s nervousness over Romney’s comments from a private fundraiser deriding the 47 percent of Americans who pay no federal income taxes.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) excused himself in the middle of the availability. The rest — Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Sens. John Thune (R-SD), Roy Blunt (R-MO) and John Barrasso (R-WY) — made no mention of Romney or the race in their comments and instead lamented Senate dysfunctionality and attacked Democratic policies.

When reporters ran after them to ask about Romney’s comments, they dodged.....

The Patch has been consistent with how they report publicly released polls ever since the local sites were launched. They have never went into reporting on the details of how the individual polls were conducted, no matter what candidate the polls favored. Instead, they present reactionary comments from both sides of the aisle as well as official comments from the polling outlet presenting the poll.

Also, Denise did not write this article - Heather Asiyanbi did. And both are pretty good about being fair and balanced in their reporting. Whenever they really do slip up, we're always pretty quick to call them on it, as Denise mentioned below.

So do us all a favor, take a chill pill, and stick to the merits of your factual argument as opposed to running around screaming media bias where there really isn't any.

While Judge Flanagan’s denial of the request for a stay does not impair or otherwise affect the Attorney General’s Motion to Bypass the Court of Appeals and obtain a Stay from the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the language in Judge Flanagan’s Order provides clear caution for the Supreme Court with respect to the disruptive impact a stay of the injunction would now have on the electoral process for the November elections, stating that "the inescapable reality is that the need for stability, predictability and adequate preparation for the electoral process strongly weighs against this court granting a stay and thus changing the voting process at this late hour." Judge Flanagan again cogently explained why he was not bound by the Supreme Court decision upholding the Indiana photo ID law in Crawford, and also refuted Van Hollen’s claim=.....

@Feia -

Hoffa was being sarcastic, in case you couldn't pick up on that! Although, Hoffa probably wouldn't mind if you skipped going to the polls ;-p

Seriously, all Hoffa wants is a fair election. And before you go into the whole 'voter fraud doesn't exist because there have been investigations and hardly any prosecutions have resulted' line of crap, I'll remind you of the recent report issued by the Racine County Sheriff's Department, wherein investigating officers admitted that our current elections system makes investigating voter fraud virtually impossible.

@ morninmist -

Hoffa didn't expect anything less from the Dane County Circuit Court, as you guys on the left clearly own that venue! That's nothing that Hoffa would personally brag about though!

Don't worry, there's still plenty of time for the Supreme Court to issue a stay of the permanent injunction. Sumi was the first to be overturned. It's only a matter of time before Flanagan, Colas, and the rest of the Dane County activist judges are also overturned by our high court.

Then we'll see who has the last laugh!

"The poll is being conducted with the highest standards of independence, impartiality, and professionalism, and uses the best in polling practices."

"The sample is selected within geographic regions of the state of Wisconsin to ensure proportionate representation of all areas of the state. Telephone numbers are dialed randomly within a list of all area codes and exchanges in the state."

"The poll has a margin of error of 3.8%. This means that 95% of the time, a poll of this size will produce results within 3.8 percentage points of what would be found if all registered voters in the state were interviewed. "

It was a rushed and bad bill.

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2012/06/military-jeff-miller-criticizes-veterans-jobs-corps-plan-060412w/

Even the Democratic-controlled Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee wasn't all that crazy about it.

As the article makes clear, vets would rather receive educational re-training opportunities rather than being pandered to with a government handout.

Once the $1B had been spent, then what? It's just like Obama's previously promised shovel ready jobs. When the money runs out, so do the jobs. Then what are vets to do? If the money was spent on education though, they'd have new skills upon which they could fall back on - imagine that!

Not to mention that vets already receive preferential treatment in regards to federal employment.

Basically, the Veterans Job Corp bill was little more than an insult to our veterans!

Now that the bad idea was shot down, maybe we can actually allocate that $1B to actually helping our vets over the remainder of their lifetimes, as opposed to the short term which was clearly done by the Obama administration to try to buy military votes in the upcoming election!

This should make anyone with half a brain sick that our President would sink to such lows just to try and garner some votes in his upcoming re-election bid. Shame on you Obama!!!

What does vets already receiving preferential treatment for federal jobs have to do with this?

I am a veteran with a 40% disability status. i received benefits that recently allowed me to finish college at an undisclosed age. I personally know that there are re-training opportunities already available to Veterans. This bill would have put those in need in jobs that could have supported their needs immediately. Don't talk to me about what Veteran benefits can do or what Veterans want because I know first hand.

Hoffa's father is a Vietnam combat vet who is 100% disabled according to the VA because of his agent orange induced cancer. My father actually had six fellow vets die in his arms during his tours of duty. How many men do you know still alive that personally know six names on the Wall in DC?

When Hoffa asked him about the bill, he called it disgraceful. It basically creates jobs just for the sake of creating jobs using taxpayer money - it's just a political pander to veterans.

Hoffa is sorry that you and other partisan vets can't see this, but government jobs like this aren't sustainable in the long term. The funding mechanism in the bill is a one time injection of $1B - that's it. There's no auto renewal, there's no permanent incorporation into the VA budget, etc. Once the money is gone, so are the jobs - and the vets are once again out of work and our government is $1B deeper in the hole that our children, whom the vets have fought for, will have to pay back.

Hoffa's father called this insulting to the vets and spirit and principles upon which they fought for. Hoffa stands with his father on this one!

Say what you feel you need to say but I will reference my first hand knowledge and experience as to what this bill would have meant to Vets and what it would have accomplished. Even if what you claim about the bill (your claims not post 2001 Vets see re posted quote below) are true, what are the GOPs plans yo help these Vets? Obstructing anything Obama proposes that could help the economy will not help our Veterans. that is what is happening here.

You only get one state to try to put into play with your VP pick. Choosing Ryan as VP candidate was Romney's attempt to put Wisconsin into play. Nate Silver currently has Wisconsin at an 82.5% likelihood win for Obama. If WI is now locked on blue, Romney doesn't have room to loose a single swing state left and still have a chance to win. And coincidentally, I also see that Nate Silver's electoral map now has Florida tinting blue, when that had been tinting red up until recently:
