Multi-Million Dollar Sussex Park Project Up for Discussion

Two open houses have been scheduled for residents to comment and ask questions about the multi-million dollar Village Park reconstruction project.

The Village of Sussex is calling on residents in August to provide feedback on the latest update of the Village Park Master Plan, a multi-million dollar project that could completely transform Sussex Village Park.

Two 'open houses' are scheduled so residents can view the plans, ask questions and make comments on the project, a topic of heated discussion after 3-D design plans were released to the public. The open house forums are scheduled during two of Sussex’s most highly attended events:

National Night Out

Sounds of Sussex

Engineering firm R.A. Smith National estimated the project would cost $11 million during the preliminary planning stages for the park in September, but Sussex officials said it’s likely that number could change. The reason for the 3-D, detailed designs was to get a more specific estimate, and a completely different design firm, Stantec, is producing the new estimate.

However, it seems as though some Sussex residents have already made up their minds regarding the plan. With a multi-million dollar price tag, Sussex Patch reader Pete says he thinks the upgrade to the park is useless.

“$11 Million? Who is paying for this?” asked Pete in the comments. “What will the cost of maintenance and upkeep be per user? Will there be user fees to offset the cost of this fiasco? Keep this kind of useless excessive spending up and you will see a population flight from the village as people won't be able to afford the property taxes. As people lose their jobs and take pay cuts, property values decline, our Parks Administration decides to spend this kind of money. How foolish.”

But to Sussex Parks and Recreation Director Amy Flaherty, the upgrades to the park are long overdue. She told Patch in June that the upgrades are needed to accommodate not only the current demands, but to prepare for the future.

“The village is expanding, and we’re trying to create a park for generations to come,” Flaherty said. “This can be something that, for the next 50 years, people can utilize. We’re not trying to just think about the ‘now.’ Also, there are so many groups that come to us that we just can’t accommodate. We’re overburdened with our facility use.”

Both Flaherty and Village Administrator Jeremy Smith say this isn’t one large project that will happen all at once, but rather a multiple-phased construction commitment that could take 20 to 50 years to complete.

For that reason, Smith said the reconstruction project would not go to referendum where residents could vote on the decision unless Sussex officials decide to take on a large portion of the project in a short amount of time.

“At this time, the cost is going in our capital budget, but this isn’t going to be something where we shut the park down and do it all at once,” Flaherty said. “For the immediate future, we don’t know how this will affect taxpayers because we don’t know what we’ll be asking for.”

The public is invited to share their comments with Sussex officials in person at the two upcoming events. Want more in-depth details on the proposed project? Check out Patch’s most recent article with 3-D renderings of the plans.

Haven't we spent enough of taxpayers money trying to design a new Main Street and the money spent on the Meissner Farm and now all the money we are paying for the designers fo the park. Our parks are just fine, we don't need to keep spending money, money and more money to please people!!!

I would like to see mini golf & go carts. Build a big water slide also. Build 2 of them. A wave pool could be a nice touch as well.

Village park is so old, it really needs to be remodeled. The plans they put forth could turn the area into a mecca for sporting events. Tournaments could be hosted there from the surrounding communities and it could be a huge boon to Sussex.

However, $11 million seems like an awful lot of money. Granted, if it takes 50 years, it's really only $220k per year. Most people can't fathom planning 50 years into the future because none of us know what anything will be like in 50 years. What were things like 50 years ago and how did they think the world would change from then until now? You can't possibly know.

If the budget can handle the expense, I'm all for it. But the design needs to be tweaked. Simple things like putting the splash pad next to the jungle gym area and things like that need to be fixed. And they need to lay out a specific timeline of what will be done when and in what order.

This is a far better way to spend money than the, now dead, business park so that helps a lot. Too bad they can't take money from the Bug Line repaving and put it towards this since it's a better use of funds.

Moving forward takes money. If we never spend anything, we'll never go anywhere, which will cause people to leave just as much as if we spend too much.

We all know the "estimated" cost of $11 MILLION would wind up being much more. When is the last time you saw something involving government come in at, or below, a projected cost? No one can predict the future costs of a plan that might take 20-50 years to complete. By that time there will probably be additional changes to the plan that will cost even more. Many residents are experiencing very hard times, many residents are on Social Security with no extra money to waste on something this extravagant. How many people who are in favor of the proposed plan will pay to use the facility? What will become of the Sussex Lions Daze, car shows, old tractor show, etc.???? I'm opposed to wasting taxpayer's money.............and this would be a huge waste.

People came to our area without this extravagance.........I dislike it when people move to this area for the rural atmosphere yet they want all the amenities of a big city.

The Sussex Sun has been mysteriously silent on this...........guess it's time to stir up local taxpayers............

Ok I am going to say this again some of the people with this idea are not from the area (ie village administrator, parks and rec director) so what do they care how much it costs. She did a similar upgrade and left elm grove for here are we going to let her use us as a stepping stone for another job, why not just simple upgrades of what we already have? There is no way they will bring in the money to support this as they have already said they do not have the money to keep the park in good shape now. The softball leagues are not full and this will not fill them either. Time for the citizens to get up and say NO to this as our taxes are getting out of hand with the village and the spending has to stop. Thanks

Common sense sussex is absolutely right.............It is time for the taxpayers to end the spending madness. It's time for an anti-spending taxpayer group, I'd suggest calling it STOP IT.............which would stand for Sussex area Taxpayers Opposed to Paying Increased Taxes..............

What is Amy Flaherry talkimg about? Our facilities are over burdened? I drive past the Maple ave tennis courts several times a day ans they are seldom used. I walk my dogs frequently around the park and seldom see it being used. A few disc golf players but that's about it. The tennis courts and playground are seldom used as it is. Now is NOT the time to commit any money to do anything except for what is necessary. What is wrong wirh these people? Do they not know the serious troublle our economy is in?
