Meijer Store Poll: What's Your Opinion
Are you for or against the proposed 200,000-square-foot store to be located at Highways K and 164.
A lot has been made of the proposed Meijer store that is being proposed in the Village of Sussex.
The store to be located at Highways K and 164, will be about 200,000-square-foot complex that will consist of grocery, retail and pharmacy. The store plans to hire 200 to 250 employees and will also include a gas station on the premise. It is expected to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Supporters have said that the big box store would be an welcomed addition to the local economy, spurring growth, traffic to other retailers and jobs.
Those that oppose the store say it is too big, will be detrimental to the enviroment and cause crime and traffic problems.
Tell us what you think about the project below in the comments and vote in the poll.

I don't think this is the right store for Sussex, there will be major crime/traffic problems. We have a Kohl's and Shopko and right down the road we have Walmart & Costco. This is my opinion tho.

I agree Krista. We do not need another big store. Enough is enough.

I've heard rumors that Shopko may be selling out. (I would not be surprised).
Why couldn't Meijer buy that building and expand on it per the new zoning?
That way we keep the quiet/rural look down at HY-K and free flowing traffic.
But then, again; I agree that Meijer may not be the right store for Sussex anyways.
For groceries alone; I know my wife would like to see a Sendiks move in.

There's a Sendik's right down Capitol Drive about 8 miles and 15 minutes away.

That's true, there's always a worry about overbuilding and leaving very large vacancies behind. There are a lot in Menomonee Falls and they are hard to fill.

We have to look at what we want Sussex to eventually become. Do we want a quaint town with boutiques and family owned businesses with higher quality or do we want big box stores to boost traffic? I, for one, would like to stay away from big box stores. I think we have enough with Shopko, Walmart, Kohl's, and Costco. Bring me in a Sendiks so that I don't have Roundy's brand pushed down my throat and produce and meat of good quality. I believe that Sussex is at a crossroads now and this decision is bigger than you think. It sets a precident for the future of the type of stores that will be attracted to the area. Think hard Sussex. This is your future.

Unfortunately Sussex does not have the demographics to support boutiques such as you suggest. It takes a lot of money to keep a business running and the "little guy" family operator generally does not have the cash flow to support a store in a town with a population like Sussex.

Mike, they are very close to Sussex. You can get there in 15 minutes. I think that's the point that was being made. Do we want Highway 164 to become Capitol Drive or Bluemound Road? I don't. I moved out here to get away from all that. I don't mind driving 15 minutes to get to where I can buy the things I need. Nobody is going to be walking to Meijers. But it will open the door to more and bigger stores all along 164.

PH, there is a Sendik's 8 miles and 15 minutes away from Sussex on Capitol. They would never build another one so close.

And, Mike. I CAN read a map. Stop splitting hairs. The point I was trying to make is that it's literally just down the road. I think Sussex has a chance to define itself, and I for one, don't want it to be known for one big box store next to another.

I agree with PH, Sussex does have an opportunity to define itself. Sussex has an opportunity to welcome additional jobs (albeit not $100K jobs), but jobs with benefits nonetheless to our community. Additionally, this store would help attract additional commercial tenants to our area and help fill many of the currently vacant locations. I still don't understand the crime argument, it's not as if criminals are looking for new stores to shop at, if anything being open 24 hours would allow for more residents to be out shopping at more convenient times, but increased criminal activity is probably a stretch. This online forum isn't going to materially change anyone's mind on the topic, but I would encourage everyone to try to look at the bigger picture and longer-term positive community impact that this would have. We don't need to compete with surrounding communities, but we do need to insure that Sussex has measured growth for the future and not isolate our community from the benefits of larger businesses.

Sussex was defined before we moved into it. 22 years ago; we wanted to get away from the city and into the rural setting without all the commercial eyesores. Sussex was defined as such a rural place; so we moved in. At that time the village board and trustees, etc. were trying to keep Sussex as a quiet place. Bottom line; the Big Picture for Sussex was defined many years ago. Sparky needs to move to Brookfield.

I have looked at the bigger picture and the long-term impact of this store. That's why I'm so opposed to it. One big box store comes in and it opens the way for more. I do NOT want 164 to become another Capitol Drive or Bluemound Road. I moved out here because of the small town atmosphere. I have no problem driving 15-30 minutes to get to a store to shop for what I need. If Meijers comes in, it's the beginning of the end for small town Sussex.

I agree Nancy. See my comment just above.
The new-bees are moving in and are trying to wreck the small town atmosphere...again; that's how Sussex was driven to be over the years.
