Meijer Open House To Be Held Next Thursday
Company officials will be on hand to answer questions about proposed store.
An open house will be held on Thursday to introduce the community to the proposed Meijer store in Sussex, according to the Sussex Sun.
The paper is reporting the event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Boneyard Pub & Grille. Community members will be able to view renderings and charts of the store while learning about the proposed store from company officials.
Lynne Broydrick, a spokeswoman for the company, told the paper that the open house is intended "to get out the right message about Meijer Company; who they are, what they are trying to do, where the store will be located and the role they will play in the community."
The 200,000-square-foot store, which plans to hire 200 to 250 employees, will be about 60 percent grocery and also consist of retail and pharmacy. The store is proposed for the corner of Highways K and 164.
The company has about 200 stores in the Midwest and plans to open three other stores in the metro area.
A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23. That meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Village Hall.

I'd like to know more, but it seems like a great opportunity for Sussex to me. Shopping options around here are very limited, and I would also LOVE to have a 24 hour store around. I did see the flyer against the develpment and I don't share its concerns. The corner under consideration is next to the large commercial office park/retail development. Seems a perfect place for a bigger store, and should invigorate activity at the office park/retail location as well. The flyer mentions increased crime. Come on, why does a grocery store increase crime? I also just don't see the issues with traffic and trucks. We get Quad Graphics trucks and especially dump trucks all day long. The trucking for a store like this would not even compare at all to that. And what does it matter if we get trucks on 164 or Lisbon anyway. Those are roads designed for all types of vehicles. As to the cost of the store to the village, I'd like to hear from our officials on that. I would assume that the store would not cost the village, but would provide greater income to the village overall. The ripple effect on other area stores and restaurants could also be beneficial if Sussex becomes a destination for outside shoppers. As long as we keep that traffic on the 164 corridor it sounds good to me.
Now if they would just raise the speed limit to 55 mph on 164…

Sure it's a great opportunity, but I think we need to be more thoughtful about changing the zoning limits. The Village board is talking about a 250,000 sq ft limit which is bigger than WalMart, bigger than Menards, bigger than Costco, bigger than any store in Brookfield except the mall. In fact, it's bigger than the Bradley Center. If we change it for Meijer, it's changed for every future development. Do we really want to be the next urban sprawl zone?

I'm with dankwen on this one. We don't need a HUGE box store.
