In one of the most historic winter storms in Wisconsin, the 2011 Groundhog Day Blizzard hit Sussex like a ton of bricks, dropping upwards of 14 inches of snow in three days.

Quite different from the high of 43 degrees expected this Groundhog Day.

Wind speeds were also recorded to top 45 mph causing snow drifts to reach huge heights of 10 to 15 feet. And between the swift wind and massive snowfall, residents were strongly urged to stay indoors as temperatures were predicted to dip to 20 below zero. 

Sussex Fire Chief Colin Curtis even asked residents to "adopt a hydrant," meaning people should shovel out the fire hydrants near their homes just in case a fire were to break loose.
