Lights Out at Sussex Pick ‘n Save and Surrounding Businesses

Residents are ushered out of the local stores until power is back online, a process that will take all afternoon.

Sussex-area residents shopping at a dozen local businesses – including the Main Street Pick ‘n Save – were cut short Thursday morning after a piece of power equipment failed, leaving the stores in the dark.

Power was lost around 11:30 a.m., according to WE Energies representative Brian Manthey, and it's still in the process of being repaired. He says the repairs will take all afternoon.

“It’s still going on right now,” Manthey said. “It looks like in Sussex there are 12 customers out of power. They’re still working on repairs… We’re still doing repairs, and it will most likely take the rest of the afternoon, until about 5 or 5:30 p.m.”

Manthey said he’s unsure what specifically caused the power outage along Main Street, but he knows certain pieces of equipment need to be replaced.

Sussex Fire Chief Colin “Corky” Curtis is also unsure what caused the outage, saying there’s a possibility it could have been weather related.

“We did stand by and close off the entrance to the Pick ‘n Save this afternoon until they had the situation denergized,” Curtis said.

Firefighters have since left the business because the situation was under control, but that doesn’t help Sussex Patch reader Ellen Venk. She sent Patch a message on Facebook saying she learned the strip mall didn't have power after going to get a haircut Cost Cutters near the grocery store.

The stores will remain closed until power is restored to the buildings later this afternoon.

I was thinking the same thing, what happened to the frozen and cooled foods, with no backup genetator, that food will spoil quicker than normal. They seem to have a problem already at pick n save with the meat section. Lately I have seen some nasty looking meat there, and it turned me off to buy from there.

The Sussex Pick n Save is EXTREMELY expensive... I drive to the one in Germantown now... I RARELY go to the Sussex location anymore. Unless stuff is on sale, then the cost is the same at all the locations.

What time did the power come back on? Does the Sussex Pick n Save have a generator to power the freezers meat and all other perishables?

Most grocery stores get dry ice to pack the coolers full to keep things cold if the power goes out. At least that's what they did when I worked there back in high school.

For the record, the power is back on. I just called and they said it was fixed around 3:45 p.m. yesterday. The coolers can sit without power for that long before the food is damaged.

I will shop @ the Falls for about 2 weeks until the perishables are turned over at the Sussex store. I don't trust meats & dairy sitting for about 5 hours without refrigeration. Would you do that @ home? I wouldn't!

Meats and frozen food doesn't spoil that fast, especially when no customers are opening the freezer doors.

I wouldn't trust dairy products. I am quite sure it would effect the expiration date.
